Jonathan "Jon" Moss is an English football referee who generally officiates in the Premier League after being promoted to the Select Group of Referees in June 2011. He is based in Leeds, West Yorkshire.

Career

Born in Sunderland, Moss grew up as a keen footballer and won a football scholarship at Central Connecticut State University but completed his studies with a degree in teaching and physical education at the University of Leeds.[1] He played junior football at academy level, firstly for his hometown club Sunderland then Millwall but stopped as the travelling to London presented too great a distraction from his A-level studies.

Moss began taking refereeing courses as part of his A-level physical education studies. Although he qualified as a referee in 1988 he did not begin focussing on his refereeing until he stopped playing football in 1999.[2]

After progressing through the Northern Counties East League and Northern Premier League, Moss was promoted to the National Group of assistant referees in 2003. Moss was appointed to referee the 2005 Conference Play-off final between Carlisle United F.C. and Stevenage F.C. He was then promoted to the National Group of referees in 2005 and his first Football League game was between Shrewsbury F.C. and Rochdale F.C.[3]

Moss became a regular official in the Football League and was appointed to his first Premier League game on 18 December between Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa at the DW Stadium however this game was postponed due to heavy snow. He was later appointed to Birmingham City's 2–1 away win at Blackpool.[4] in the Premier League on 4 January 2011. He then refereed the match between Wigan Athletic and Aston Villa which had previously been postponed. This ended with a 2–1 win to Villa.

It was announced on 20 June 2011 that Moss had been promoted to the Select Group of Referees and will officiate Premier League matches more regularly. He joined the Select Group alongside fellow newly promoted referee Neil Swarbrick for the 2011–12 season.
