Karl Lacey is an inter-county GAA football player with Donegal in Ireland.
He was part of the Donegal team that won its first National League title in 2007 in the final against Mayo.[1]
In 2011 he helped Donegal to a first Ulster Championship win in 19 years when they beat Derry in the final.
He also won an All Ireland Vocational Schools title in 2002 when Donegal over came Kerry in the final.
He is known as a versatile defender, able to play anywhere in the back 6. Widely renowned as one of the best half backs in Ireland, Lacey is a consistent performer and never far away from an All-Star nomination. He is seen as a very influential man to many young footballers. Usually seen with the white boots and white thermal shorts, he also contributes time to compete in voluntary work in the aid of charity.
To date, he has collected one SFC, one U21FC and two MFC medals with his club. With Donegal he gained an Ulster Championship medal, NFL medal and he captained the Donegal team to All-Ireland Vocational Schools FC success in 2002. He won a Railway Cup medal with Ulster. At college level, he won three Sigerson Cup medals, one with UUJ and two with Sligo IT.
One of Lacey's best inter-county seasons was 2011. Not only did he receive an all star award and Ulster-Championship medal, but he also put in a number of great displays and usually kept each opponents danger man quiet while collecting a few scores himself. In the semi-final of the Ulster-Championship, Lacey was deployed on Tyrone's in-form player, Brian McGuigan. Lacey excelled and kept McGuigan from having any real say in the game. Not only did he display his defensive qualities but he also showed his attacking side when he provided an assist for Colm McFadden's goal through a surging run from deep. He also set up the winning goal coming from Dermot Molloy which left the final score at 2-06 to 0-09. In the final they faced a strong Derry side, on-form after a huge win over Armagh. This time Lacey was deployed on another danger man, Mark Lynch. Once again his defensive qualities shone through and resulted in Donegal lifting their first Ulster-Championship title in a number of years. With these performances, not only did he win an All-Star award, but he also received the Ulster Footballer of The Year Award.
He has won three All Star awards in 2006 and 2009 and in 2011.[2]
With his club The Four Masters he won a Donegal Senior Football Championship in 2003.
