After gaining an interest in archaeology while at college, she went on to study a bachelor's degree at Wheaton College, before then completing her masters degree at Northwestern University. She then went on to work in Durango, studying artifacts from the Anasazi people.[3] She then went on to work for the Sierra Club.

In her role as an environmental lawyer, her primary focus is on how changes in law and policy could affect both public health and the environment, in line with the views of SEHN.[4] During her time with SEHN she has become an authority on the Precautionary Principle and is also a keen advocate of ecological medicine, a phrase she coined during at interview with UTNE in 2001.[5]
