Lieutenant-General Javed Iqbal HI(M) is currently the Commander of XXXI Corps[1]. Before assuming charge he was President of the National Defence University (NDU), Islamabad; he was appointed to this position on 20 August 2013. Iqbal took over the position from his predecessor Lt Gen. Nasser Khan Janjua, who left on 20 August 2013 for his new appointment as Corps Commander, XII Corps, Quetta.[2] At the time of appointment, Iqbal was serving as the Chief Instructor of the B Division at NDU.

Military career

Javed Iqbal was commissioned in the Sind Regiment in the 62nd PMA Long Course on 24 October 1980.

During his military career, he attended courses related to military training and educational opportunities as junior as well as senior military commander in national and international institutions. The General Officer is a graduate of Command and Staff College, Quetta, Defence Services Command and Staff College, Dhaka (Bangladesh), the erstwhile National Defence College (Pakistan) and Royal College of Defence Studies (United Kingdom). He also holds two master degrees, one in War Studies and the other in International Studies from NDU Islamabad and King's College London. He has served as Military Adviser to the Permanent Representative of Pakistan to United Nations Headquarters, New York. The General has commanded two Infantry Battalions and two Infantry Brigades.

During his tenure as a Major General, he was posted as the General Officer Commanding (GOC) of the 19th Division which was busy fighting off the insurgents in Swat Valley. He led his forces from the front and was injured by enemy sniper fire while he was airborne in the mountainous village of Nusrat Darra in the north of the valley.[3] Later he was posted as the Commandant/Chief Instructor of the B-Division and Armed Forces War College at NDU Islamabad.

The General has been a frequent guest speaker on numerous international seminars and conferences on counter insurgency, disaster response, humanitarian assistance, and civil - military coordination. On 9 August 2013, Javed was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General[4] and later appointed as the President of NDU Islamabad.
