Nagaizumi (長泉町, Nagaizumi-chō) is a town located in Suntō District, Shizuoka Prefecture, Japan. As of September 2014, the town had an estimated population of 42,100 and a population density of 1,590 persons per km². The total area was 26.51 km².

Geography

Nagaizumi is located in east-central Shizuoka Prefecture, south of Mount Fuji, and north of Izu Peninsula. The area has a temperate maritime climate with hot, humid summers and mild, cool winters.

History

Nagaizumi is located in the far eastern portion of former Suruga Province, and was largely tenryō territory under direct control of the Tokugawa shogunate in the Edo period. During the reform of the early Meiji period on April 1, 1888 the area was reorganized into the village of Nagaizumi through the merger of 10 small hamlets. Nagaizumi achieved town status on April 1, 1960.

Economy

Nagaizumi is host to numerous industries, including paper mills, and chemical plants. Large factories are operated by Toray Industries, Kyowa Hakko Kirin Co., Ltd., Toho Tenax, Tokushu Paper Mfg. Co., Ltd., and Olympus Corporation. Nagaizumi also serves as a bedroom community for the industrial zones in neighoring Mishima and Numazu. Agricultural products of Nagaizumi include persimmons, Japanese mountain yam, white Welsh Onions and Muskmelon.

Transportation
