Ananias Eloi Castro Monteiro (20 January 1989 – 28 November 2016), known as Ananias, was a Brazilian footballer who last played as an attacking midfielder for Chapecoense.
Career
Born in São Luís, Maranhão, Ananias graduated from Bahia's youth categories, and made his professional debuts in 2008 Série B. In 2011, he was loaned to Portuguesa, in a two-year deal.[1][2]
After good performances on the club, and with Lusa being compared with Barcelona, Ananias was called Ananiesta (compared with Andrés Iniesta) by the fans.[3] In April 2012, Portuguesa bought half of his rights from Bahia.
On 29 May 2013 Ananias was loaned to Palmeiras.[4] After achieving promotion with the club he was subsequently loaned to Sport Recife and Chapecoense.
On 28 November 2016, his team traveled to Medellín to play the Copa Sudamericana Cup final against Atletico Nacional. However, the flight that transported the team to Colombia suffered an accident
due to an electrical fault killing 76 occupants, including Coaches, footballers, journalists and staff of the LaMia airlines. In the accident 4 footballers survived (Alan Ruschel, Danilo Padilha, Jakson Follmann and Hélio Hermito Zampier Neto), although after the passage of the hours the death of goalkeeper Danilo was confirmed.
