Awards and Honors

The second paragraph of the lead is a dominating chunk of data. Most of it needs relegation to a new section. Instead the lead should provide summary, presumably regarding his importance to fantasy or science fiction or role-playing games (I don't say all three).

But all three may be appropriate. I don't know. -P64

Beside technical editing and Gaean Reach (above), I have expanded the {{infobox writer}} especially to name The Dying Earth (even that isn't named in the lead) and two Awards (perhaps making it more palatable to relegate Awards data in general?). Perhaps "Notable works" should be more than D.E.; certainly "and career honors" should be deleted or replaced by whatever is most significant (not a complete list). In the lead section today I started to separate the major career honors (with official refs and brief expls) from the laundry list of awards details (with [ref name=SFAwards] as far as it goes).

Much of the latter as it remains, the middle of three lead paragraphs, should be relegated to somewhere below. Some of it needs references. In a section dedicated to Award and honors there will be room for some expl as I have provided for the SFWA Grand Master in the lead.

Lee Anna Vance

His debut publisher Sam Merwin married Lee Anna Vance of New York City in 1934 (we cite NYTimes "Marriages" 1934-01-10). Any relation? --P64 (talk) 00:04, 5 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

From what I remember of his autobiography, Jack Vance's paternal grandfather married and had his children in California. His father never divorced his mother, living out his life after their separation in the San Francisco house he had appropriated from his wife (it was a gift from her father that he deeded over to his sister). This sister is the only paternal relative mentioned, but her children wouldn't have the surname Vance anyways. So I don't see how any Vance of New York could be more than a distant relative.

Merwin also apparently turned down the Dying Earth stories before he accepted "The World-Thinker", which doesn't sound like nepotism. Laura Scudder | talk 23:59, 30 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone have This is Me on hand?

I just noticed that the LA Times obit quotes John Vance as saying his father never graduated, which contradicts this article. I thought he said in his memoir that he graduated, too, but don't own a copy. Can anyone confirm that? Laura Scudder | talk 14:41, 31 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Cugel Victorious

Cugel is a complete rogue, who is nevertheless worthy of sympathy in always failing to achieve his goals.[17]

This statement is inaccurate. At the end of "Cugel's Saga", Cugel has achieved wealth and power, having destroyed Iucounu, his nemesis.

There is also a massive inconsistency between the two Cugel novels. In "The Eyes of the Overworld", it is Cugel's trespass into Iucounu's mansion that initiates their conflict, and Cugel's nasty situation at the conclusion, is caused not by the then helpless Iucounu's malice, but by Cugel's misuse of Iucounu's magic. Date of birth

Most of the numerous Vance titles I own have JV born in 1920. I'll respect the comment to the contrary in the lead, but in view of the ambiguity it would be good to have a reference for the 1916 date. I've noted that it often appears as 1920 Chrismorey (talk) 06:48, 6 July 2015 (UTC)[reply]
