Devoleena Bhattacharjee (born 22 August 1985) is an Indian television actress and a trained Bharatanatyam dancer known for portraying Gopi Modi in the Star Plus drama series Saath Nibhaana Saathiya.[2] In 2019, she participated in Bigg Boss 13 as a contestant.[3]

Personal life

Devoleena Anima Bhattacharjee was born on 22 August 1985 to a Bengali family in Upper Assam.[4][5][1] She lives in Mumbai with her mother and her younger brother.[6]

She did her schooling from Godhula Brown Memorial English High School in Sivasagar, Assam and her higher studies from the National Institute of Fashion and Technology in New Delhi, India.[7]

Career

Initially Bhattacharjee worked as a jewellery designer in Gili India Ltd. in Mumbai.[7] She is a trained Bharatnatyam dancer and an actress.[7] She was first noticed when she auditioned for the dance reality series Dance India Dance 2.[6] Her acting debut was in NDTV Imagine's Sawaare Sabke Sapne Preeto as Bani.[8]

In June 2012, Bhattacharjee was cast as Gopi Modi, a lead character in the Star Plus drama Saath Nibhaana Saathiya after Giaa Manek, who previously played the role, was ousted from the series.[9] In 2014 and again in 2016, she contemplated quitting the show due to the frequent time leaps,[10][11] but she continued to be a part of the show and in June 2017, Devoleena completed five years.[12] In the same month, she underwent spinal surgery for an injury that took place on the show's set in 2013.[13] The series ended on 23 July 2017 after doing well for seven years.[14][15]

In June 2018, Bhattacharjee was signed to portray the lead in an Colors TV series Kuch Naye Rishte opposite actor Pratham Girdhar.[16]

As of September 2019, Devoleena is a celebrity contestant in the thirteenth season of the reality TV show Bigg Boss.[17] The first promo with feature her was released on 20 September. The show premiered on 29 September. In November 2019, she exited the show owing medical issues.[18]

Controversy

In December 2018, she was summoned by the police officers on Diamond merchant Udani's murder case after her number was seen in his call details.[19] However speaking to India Today she said, "There's nothing to be tensed. I am safe and at home. It was just a normal investigation. Nothing to worry about."[20]
