The Chennai city area consists of 1,189 km2(459 sq mi) and has population of 8,917,749. Since 1974, an area encompassing 1189 km2 around the city has been designated as the Chennai metropolitan area (CMA) and the CMDA has been designated as the authority to plan the growth of the city and the area around it.

The CMA falls in three Districts of the Tamil Nadu State viz. Chennai District, part of Thiruvallur District from Tiruvettriyur to ponnamalle Taulk, and part of Kancheepuram District Pallavaram to Vandalur.

Greater Chennai Corporation Limit North Side Covers up to Athipattu Minjur North west Side cover up to Avadi, Patabhiram and Thirunindravur area And then covers up to areas like Poonamalle Nazerathpet and nalur From Poonnamalle Taulks .Redhills Karanodai. West side Covers Pallavaram taluks region Mangadu and Kundrathur. Then Sriperumbudur Taluk region up to Varadharajapuram. East side Covers Uthandi and kunathur and South side covers up to Chengalpattu taluka regions like Mannivakkam kandigai, mambakkam and Vandalur. Only region which Comes Under Chennai city Limits. will be given CMDA approval for lands and building construction. While DTCP approval will be given to Towns outside Chennai like Kanchipuram region places like Urapakkam, Guduvancheri, Potheri and other Chengalpattu taluka regions.
Places nearby Chennai city call themselves Chennai will not have Chennai pin code and CMDA approvals. Thus proves those regions were Outside Chennai. Chennai city pin code starts with Chennai city 600001 to 600130. Rest pin codes were not considered as Chennai like Starts with 601, 602 or 603 etc.There are some exceptions, still Thirunindravur has the Pincode 602024 and it's part of Chennai City. Due to slow growth in development and since this Pincode serves a larger area the Pincode hasn't been changed yet to this location. There are few other places in south Chennai has Pincode starts with 602 and 603 and still considered as part of Chennai.
Places are not part of Chennai city
These places belong to Kanchipuram District and Chengalpattu taluka regions and will not have any connection to Chennai, other than situated nearby Chennai city. These census town were developed rapidly because of their proximity to Chennai city.
