Main Page error reports

To report an error you have noticed on the current Main Page or tomorrow's Main Page please add it to the appropriate section below. You can do this by pressing the [edit] button to the right of the appropriate section's heading. Also, please sign your post using four tildes (~~~~)

Note that the current date and time are in Coordinated Universal Time (UTC), which may not coincide with your local time zone. The next day's featured article of the day, picture of the day, and anniversaries update at midnight (00:00) according to UTC. The current time is 01:33 on October 5, 2024 (UTC). (Update)

Once an error has been fixed, the error report will be removed from this page; please check the page's history to verify that the error has been rectified and for any other comments the administrator may have made. Lengthy discussions should not take place here, and should be moved to a suitable location elsewhere.

References are helpful, especially when reporting an obscure factual or grammatical error, and a suggested rewording is helpful with a stylistic complaint. The main page usually defers to supporting pages for facts.

Errors in In the news

Moved from Talk:Main Page. Puchiko (Talk-email) 23:05, 11 February 2008 (UTC) The In The News article about Egypt winning the football match says it was an "association football" match. Our Association football article defines "Association football, commonly known as football or soccer". And so it is. Worldwide except the US it is called by those two common names. So why doesn't Wikipedia refer to it by the widely used and recognized name soccer, or football, in our In The News item? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 222.153.68.41 (talk) 22:55, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I can't know the thoughts of whoever wrote the entry, of course, but I'd imagine its largely a matter of precision. While either "football" or "soccer" would be correct, they can also refer to other things. If, on the other hand, we say "association football", there's no ambiguity.--Fyre2387 (talkcontribs) 23:14, 11 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
This is the second (I think) time I've ever seen association football. I had to look it up, because I'm familiar with soccer being called football, but none of my international coaches (Northern Ireland, Sourh Africa and Australia) ever call it "association football." Although Association football is a formal name, I do not believe that it is habitually used anywhere. Those who mean another game, or would be faced with ambiguity, when they say "football" almost invariably call this sport "soccer". With all due respect to Fyre, I do not believe that anything else is commonly called "soccer". Kevin McE (talk) 01:21, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Errors in Selected anniversaries/On this day

Can I suggest that a decision is made about whether these snippets are written as straight prose, or with a thematic teaser: today we have 2 items in one format and 3 in another. Kevin McE (talk) 01:30, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The same inconsistency is lined up for tomorrow. Kevin McE (talk) 01:40, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If we are not told when either the construction was completed, or the picture taken, then the information that the interval between the two events was "as few as 10 years" is unhelpful. Can an image on my computer screen be described as a print? Kevin McE (talk) 01:49, 12 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
