Ghana braids (also known as tresses Sénégalaise[1], not to be confused with the country of Ghana) is a Senegalese hairstyle named after the ancient empire of Ghana[2]. As a mean of emphasizing their beauty and social status by women in the Jollof empire this type of protective hair braiding is now widely adapted by stylists throughout West Africa and all over the world.

These hairstyles can be thick, thin, natural or with extensions added in to increase the hair length. They are mainly characterized by the way they are braided closely to the scalp and often decorated with beads, charms or other accessoiries.
