Chukuka Samuel Enwemeka is a seasoned academic,[1][2][3] Emeritus Professor, San Diego State University, San Diego, California,[4] Emeritus Distinguished Professor, University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee.[5][6] He served as the President/ Vice Chancellor of James Hope University, Lagos, Nigeria.[7]

Early Life and Education

Professor Enwemeka was born on March 7, 1953 at Agbor, formerly in Western Region, Nigeria, currently Delta State, Nigeria.[1] He obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Ibadan, his Master of Science degree from the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, and his Ph.D. from New York University, New York. All his academic degrees are in the field of Physical Therapy.[1][4][6]

Academic Career

He began his academic career as a Graduate Assistant at the University of Port Harcourt, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, Nigeria. Following his Ph.D., he served as a Research Fellow at Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine, New York University Medical Center, New York, before joining the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio as Assistant Professor of Physical Therapy, Cellular and Structural Biology and Physiology in 1986. In 1989 he was appointed Associate Professor of Orthopedics and Rehabilitation at the University of Miami School of Medicine, Miami, Florida, and in 1993 he became Professor and Chairperson of Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Science at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas.[1][8] Enwemeka was appointed Professor and Dean, College of Health Professions, New York Institute of Technology in March 2003.[1][9] His subsequent executive academic leadership positions include: Dean College of Health Sciences, University of Wisconsin—Milwaukee (July 2009 – June 2014),[5][10] and Provost and Senior Vice President of San Diego State University, San Diego, California from June 2014 to May 2018.[11][12]

Internationally, Professor Enwemeka held Visiting Professorships at Curtin University, Perth, Australia and at The Research Institute for Health Sciences and Education, Tokyo, Japan, and is currently a Visiting Professor to the University of Johannesburg and the University of Nigeria.[1][4]

World-wide, Professor Enwemeka is one of the foremost authorities in the use of lasers, and monochromatic light for the treatment of pain, injuries, and infectious diseases.[13] He and his colleagues pioneered the use of antimicrobial Pulsed Blue Light (PBL) to “kill” viruses, bacteria, and other microorganisms, including coronaviruses.[14] [15] [16] As an inventor, he holds four US and international patents on “Photo-eradication of Microorganism With Blue Light”, and has authored more than 100 peer-reviewed research papers, books and book chapters.[17] He served as Editor, or Co-Editor-in-Chief of several international scientific and professional journals and is Emeritus Editor-In-Chief of Laser Therapy Journal and Emeritus Co-Editor-in-Chief of Photomedicine and Laser Surgery, currently known as Photobiomodulation, Photomedicine, and Laser Surgery.

Professor Enwemeka is a vastly published author with hundreds of peer-reviewed publications, books, monographs, national and international presentations, invited guest lectures, and many more. Some of his vast published works are available via PubMed.[18] According to ResearchGate, Professor Enwemeka's scholarly work has been cited over 6,197 times; his Research index Score is 3,273, and H-index of 40.[19] Google Scholar reported that Professor Enwemeka's works have been cited 8,100 times, h-index of 43, he has an i10-index of 75.[20]

Board Appointments And Other Positions Held

Professor Enwemeka served as a Non-Executive Director of Zenith Bank from July 2010 to June 2022,[21] and as a Board Member of several organizations, including, Curative Healthcare Network in Wisconsin, Milwaukee Academy of Science and San Diego Symphony. He was a member of the National Advisory Board on Medical Rehabilitation Research, US National Institutes of Health for four years, and he chaired the Board for one year.[22] Enwemeka served as a Trustee of California Western School of Law, San Diego, California and is currently a Trustee of James Hope College, Agbor, Delta State, Nigeria,[23] and James Hope University, Lagos, Nigeria.[7]

  • As a distinguished guest speaker at University Place-Academic Evenings, on March 25, 2014. University Place is a local public television program presented by PBS Wisconsin. Professor Enwemeka presented on a topic titled, Full Spectrum: The Promise of Light as Medicine. In the talk, Professor Enwemeka, Dean, College of Health Sciences, UW-Milwaukee, shares the latest medical applications for phototherapy in the treatment of a wide variety of ailments. Near-infrared and blue light can be used to destroy dangerous pathogens.[24] [25]
  • On November 2, 2021, Professor Enwemeka was distinguished guest speaker for the University of Johannesburg on a talk titled, Microbial Disinfection With Pulsed Blue Light, aired on Facebook Live. In the talk, Professor Enwemeka discussed how to use pulsed blue light as for microbial disinfection, including that for the COVID-19 virus.[26]
  • In January 2009, reputable Peer-Review Manuscripts Publisher, Mary Ann Liebert, released the news that Professor Enwemeka's research team, then at the New York Institute of Technology, has discovered that Blue Light can destroy antibiotic resistant bacterial that causes staph infections.[27] [28], and published in the the Journal, Lasers in Surgery and Medicine.[29]

Resignation as Provost, San Diego State University

In 2018, Professor Enwemeka resigned as Provost and Senior Vice President of San Diego State University. However, in controversial reports, a few media outlets speculated the reason of his resignation as being the fallout of an email he wrote to a faculty colleague.[30][31][32] Unbeknownst to the reporters, Enwemeka had, one year earlier, notified some of his friends and colleagues, and the leadership of the university of his intention to leave his leadership position and return to the faculty to pursue his research work.[33]
