Trinity Saioo is an Indian agriculturalist and educator known for her remarkable contributions to turmeric farming, particularly the Lakadong variety, in Meghalaya.

Early Life and Education

Trinity Saioo, a tribal farmer, was born and raised in Mulieh village in the West Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya, India.

Agricultural Advocacy

In 2003, Saioo initiated the women-led turmeric farming movement in Meghalaya, focusing on the Lakadong variety. She played a crucial role in tripling the incomes of women farmers through sustainable and organic farming practices.

Under Saioo's leadership, the Lakadong turmeric cultivation gained momentum, with 800 farmers coming together within four years. The Lakadong variety, indigenous to the Jaintia hills, gained popularity for its high curcumin content (about 7%).

Mission Lakadong

Saioo realized the value of the distinctive Lakadong variety and commercialized it with the help of other uneducated villagers. This proved to be extremely helpful as they could now make ends meet by farming. She assisted illiterate women with organic certification, marketing, and documentation to avail subsidies. Trinity Saioo is an unsung hero of the agriculture industry who provided an opportunity for many other women like her to work and support their families.

Recognition and Awards

Trinity Saioo received the prestigious Padma Shri award on the 71st Republic Day in 2020 for her outstanding contributions to turmeric farming and the upliftment of women in agriculture.
