Virudhunagar Junction railway station (station code: VPT) is a junction railway station serving the town of Virudhunagar in Tamil Nadu, India. The station is a part of the Madurai railway division of the Southern Railway zone.[1] It is a major junction in Indian Railways. It enhance connectivity to major stations Madurai, Kanniyakumari, Kollam, Karaikudi, Tuticorin, Rameswaram, Tirunelveli, Coimbatore, Trichy. It is the only way to connect Kanniyakumari, Tirunelveli, Sengottai from Chennai otherwise it has to travel around Kerala.
Location and layout
The Virudhunagar Junction is located on the North Eastern side of the city adjacent to the town's SIDCO industrial estate. The station bears the intersection of four branching railway lines and the next nearest train stations are:
- Kalligudi railway station (North)
- Sattur railway station (South)
- Aruppukkottai railway station (East)
- Sivakasi railway station (West)
The nearest airport is the Madurai International Airport situated 53.4 kilometres (33.2 mi)[2] away in Madurai.
