DAWS (DJ)

DAWS is the alias of Natalie Daws, an Australian DJ and music producer. Originally from Perth, she moved to Melbourne in 2018 and released her debut EP as DAWS in May 2023. Her music style is associated with House, Tech House, Techno and Ambient.

Career

Growing up, both parents supported Natalie to play piano and guitar. She had her first contact with electronic music as a child through the music video TV programme Rage. By 15 she became influenced by electronic music such as Basement Jaxx and Paul Johnson and began making CDs with songs she liked to share with friends.

After high school, she began working as a door-girl at a local club to combine her interests with music and nightlife culture. It was there that she became aware of the viability of DJing as a career.

She began her career as DJ in 2014 by making mixes of music from her collection of compilation CDs and music she had downloaded from Youtube. Natalie uploaded these initial mixes to Soundcloud under the name DAWS.

In 2016, she started experimenting with production by making beats using in Ableton. While studying at university, she used the money saved from working and enrolled in a part-time music production course at to improve her music production skills. After completing university in 2018, Natalie moved to Melbourne to take her music and DJ career to wider audiences.

In 2019 Andy Garvey invited her to produce a mix for Triple J's lauded Mix Up series. [1]

In 2020 she launched ADHD Edits as project for ADHD Unlimited, a label related to making electronic bootlegs of popular music for charity.

In 2022 she remixed 'For The Birds' for Izzy Locke's sophomore release on Phenomena Records. [2]

As DAWS, Natalie has released several singles and an EP, and toured around the world and performed at Pitch and ADE festivals.

In 2023 she released Ultra Feeling, for her debut EP on Unknown to the Unknown's Hot Haus Recs, a UK based label with releases from artists such as Chaos in the CBD, DJ Haus, and Interplanetary Criminal.

Natalie has professed her solidarity to the indigenous peoples of Australia, the land where she grew up, with her label donating all profits in support of these causes. [5]
