What city is the University of Richmond in?

[edit]

According to intuition and google, the school is in Richmond, Virginia. But... look at the address on the institution's website, e.g., https://www.richmond.edu/ (scroll to the bottom). You'll find "University of Richmond, Virginia" across the website. Not "Richmond, Virginia." What gives? Cka3n (talk) 18:43, 30 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

"University of Richmond, Virginia" is the mailing address as the university has its own zip code (23173) served by a U.S. Postal Service contractual post office on campus. Postal addresses do not necessarily correspond to physical location, and the main campus is primarily located within the Richmond city limits with small portions on the periphery in neighboring Henrico County. "University of Richmond, Virginia" is an artificial construct for the convenience of getting mail to the university, not an actual political/administrative subdivision of the Commonwealth of Virginia. (Side note: The USPS actually prefers that simply "Richmond" be used when addressing mail to 23173, but there is a long history of "University of Richmond" being used which is a hard habit to break.)
