The Hellenic Initiative is a humanitarian aid and economic development nonprofit organization established in 2012 for Greece.[1][2][3] It appeals to the Greek diaspora to create jobs, support sustainable economic recovery and renew the country for people in crisis.[4]
The Hellenic Initiative (THI) is a global non-profit organization that unites Diaspora Greeks and Philhellenes to invest in Greece's future through programs focused on crisis relief, entrepreneurship, and economic development.
History
The Hellenic Initiative (THI) was founded in 2012 in the United States by members of the global Greek and Philhellene communities. These founders responded to Greece's worsening economic crisis to address the country's short-term needs and long-term recovery efforts. Since its launch, THI has expanded its reach with chapters in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom.[5]
Mission and Objectives
THI's mission is to mobilize the Greek diaspora and Philhellenes to support sustainable economic recovery and renewal for the Greek people. The organization's key objectives include:
- Providing crisis relief to those in need
- Supporting entrepreneurship to stimulate economic growth
- Promoting economic development and job creation through various initiatives and programs
Programs
THI grantees are selected based on their proven efficiency and transparency, and each is thoroughly vetted by THI staff. Each grant is accompanied by a set of success metrics and a monitoring process to track the allocation of funds and assess its impact.
Crisis Relief
THI focuses on immediate crisis relief efforts to support those affected by economic hardships in Greece. The company’s approach is responsive to emerging crises and proactive, aiming to build the resilience of vulnerable people and communities. This includes providing food, medical supplies, and other essential resources to vulnerable populations. From 2012 to 2024, THI allocated $9.5 million through over 200 grants dedicated to crisis relief efforts in Greece.[6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13]
Economic Development
THI invests in long-term economic development initiatives to promote sustainable growth. This includes supporting small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), creating jobs, and encouraging foreign investment in Greece. By revitalizing the Greek entrepreneurial spirit, THI aims to foster innovation and mitigate the "brain drain" of young professionals, encouraging them to stay in Greece and turn their ideas into successful businesses. From 2012 to 2024, THI has allocated $13 million through over 100 grants dedicated to these economic development efforts.
Global Presence
THI operates internationally with chapters in:
- United States: The founding chapter, coordinating global efforts and partnerships.
- Australia: Engaging the Greek diaspora in Australia to support THI's mission.[14][15][16]
- Canada: Mobilizing Canadian Greeks to contribute to THI initiatives.[17]
- United Kingdom: Facilitating support and involvement from the UK-based Greek community.

Notable Initiatives & Programs
ReGeneration
ReGeneration is one of The Hellenic Initiative's flagship programs. It is dedicated to addressing youth unemployment in Greece by bridging the gap between education and the labor market. This program provides young professionals with valuable work experience, mentorship, and training opportunities, enhancing their employability and career prospects.
Launched to combat the high youth unemployment rates in Greece, ReGeneration collaborates with leading companies and organizations to offer paid internships and job placements. The program focuses on equipping participants with practical skills and professional development, thereby fostering a new generation of skilled professionals ready to contribute to Greece's economic recovery.
Since its inception, ReGeneration has successfully placed thousands of young Greeks in meaningful employment positions, helping to reduce the "brain drain" and retain talent within the country. This initiative supports individual career growth and contributes to the broader goal of sustainable economic development in Greece.
Plant a Tree in Greece
The "Plant a Tree in Greece" campaign is an environmental initiative initiated by The Hellenic Initiative (THI) to promote reforestation and environmental sustainability in Greece. This campaign combats deforestation and restores natural habitats. It contributes to the global fight against climate change by planting trees in areas that have been affected by wildfires and other environmental challenges.
Launched as part of THI's broader vision of sustainable development, the "Plant a Tree in Greece" campaign involves collaboration with local communities, environmental organizations, and volunteers. The initiative focuses on planting trees and emphasizes education and awareness about the importance of environmental conservation.
Through this campaign, THI has successfully planted thousands of trees across various regions in Greece, helping to rejuvenate forests, protect biodiversity, and improve the quality of life for local communities. By engaging the Greek diaspora and Philhellenes worldwide, THI fosters a sense of global responsibility and collective action towards a greener and more sustainable future for Greece.[20][21]
THI Summer Youth Academy
The THI Summer Youth Academy is a program initiated by The Hellenic Initiative (THI) to empower young Greeks through sports, education, and community engagement. This academy provides a holistic environment where children from underprivileged backgrounds can develop physical, intellectual, and social skills.
The academy offers a blend of on-court activities, including basketball training, fitness sessions, and tournaments, combined with off-court experiences such as coaching, excursions, inspirational speeches, and special workshops. The program's primary goal is to empower participants and build a network that offers personal growth and extends beyond the sports arena.
Special attention is given to children from vulnerable groups, including refugees, orphans, and those from low-income families.[22][23][24][25]
Global Community
The Hellenic Initiative is the largest global organization in the Greek diaspora. Our biggest asset is by far our vibrant community. The Hellenic Initiative is rapidly growing every year, from our dedicated board members to our passionate staff, generous donors and dedicated volunteers, it's people who make our mission possible. We have built a strong bridge of trust between the diaspora and Greece and that is why people are drawn to THI. People of every age, gender, religion, Greek and Philhellene, 1st generation or 5th generation, everyone feels welcome and has a seat at the table in our community.
The Hellenic Initiative (THI) New Leaders are an international group of like-minded professionals under 45 years of age who actively believe in investing in the future of Greece through direct philanthropy and economic revitalization. New Leaders are Greeks and Philhellenes of the Diaspora who are passionate about working together (Oli Mazi) to fundraise, donate their time, resources, skills and expertise in helping to build a better future for Hellas.
Membership Programs
The Hellenic Initiative (THI) offers various membership programs designed to engage supporters in its mission of promoting economic development and community resilience in Greece.
New Leaders
The New Leaders program is an initiative by The Hellenic Initiative (THI) designed to engage and empower the next generation of Greek and Philhellene leaders. This program targets young professionals, offering them opportunities to connect, collaborate, and contribute to the economic and social development of Greece. The New Leaders program focuses on fostering leadership skills, promoting professional growth, and encouraging civic engagement among its members. Participants benefit from a variety of activities, including networking events, mentorship opportunities, educational workshops, and exclusive access to THI’s broader network of influential individuals and organizations. By joining the New Leaders program, young professionals become part of a dynamic community committed to making a positive impact on Greece. They work together to support THI's mission through fundraising efforts, volunteering, and advocacy, contributing fresh perspectives and innovative ideas to the organization’s initiatives. The program also serves as a stepping stone for young leaders to take on more significant roles within THI and other philanthropic efforts, ensuring a sustainable and impactful future for the Greek and Philhellene communities.
1821 Society
Members of the 1821 Society are part of a distinguished group of benefactors who share a passion for Greek heritage and a dedication to THI's mission of crisis relief, economic development, and fostering entrepreneurship. The idea behind this founding of this group is as a new “Philiki Eteria” (the secret society founded in 1814 by Diaspora Greeks to fight for Greek Independence). As modern-day Diaspora Greeks, we are as committed to that freedom for Greece as our ancestors ever were. Today, that cause means helping Greece rebuild its economy, reversing the brain drain, and addressing Greece’s humanitarian needs. We are also committed to passing down the fullness of our Greek legacy to the coming generations, by connecting global Hellenism through the 1821 Society.
The flagship of the 1821 Society is the Lord Byron Circle. The members of this Circle provide leadership and guidance for THI’s philanthropic efforts. Lord Byron Circle benefits of membership include exclusive invitations to high-profile events, networking opportunities with other influential members of the Greek diaspora and Philhellenes, and regular updates on the impact of their contributions. The 1821 Society serves not only as a fundraising arm but also as a vibrant community of individuals united by their commitment to Greece's future.
Notable Events
THI New York Annual Gala
The THI New York Gala is one of the premier annual fundraising events organized by The Hellenic Initiative (THI). Held in the heart of New York City, this prestigious event gathers members of the Greek diaspora, Philhellenes, and prominent business and community leaders to celebrate and support THI's mission of investing in the future of Greece through crisis relief, economic development, and entrepreneurship. The gala features a sophisticated evening of dining, entertainment, and inspiring speeches from notable figures who share a deep commitment to Greece. Guests have the opportunity to network, engage with THI's initiatives, and participate in live and silent auctions featuring exclusive items and experiences, with all proceeds directly benefiting THI’s programs.
Over the years, the THI New York Gala has become the most significant philanthropic event both within and outside of Greece, raising millions of dollars to support essential projects. The funds raised have been instrumental in providing crisis relief, fostering entrepreneurship, and driving economic growth, making a tangible difference in the lives of countless Greeks. The gala also serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring connection between the global Greek community and their homeland, reinforcing the collective effort to ensure a prosperous and sustainable future for Greece.[26][27][28][29][30][31][32]
THI London Annual Gala
The Hellenic Initiative’s (THI) Annual London Gala demonstrates the Greek Diaspora’s solidarity with the people of Greece raising significant funds to directly support humanitarian relief and economic development for Greece and Cyprus, including continuing backing for young entrepreneurs and startups.[33]
Athens Volunteer Plant A Tree Events
The Hellenic Initiative has launched a campaign entitled “Plant a Tree In Greece”, which aims to have a measurable positive impact on Greece by reforesting the land and restoring the livelihoods destroyed in the wildfires of 2021. In response to the crisis in the Summer of 2021, The Hellenic Initiative launched an online campaign for wildfire relief and raised over $600,000 from 4,500 donors in 47 countries. The Hellenic Initiative began deploying these funds by planting 2,200 trees in Evia in the areas of Rovies, Limni, and Papades.
THI continues this campaign with an ongoing global initiative in which Greeks of the Diaspora and Philhellenes will have the opportunity to purchase a tree for $25 to be planted in Greece. This cost will cover the planting of the tree, its care for the crucial two first years, and related sustainability efforts in Greece. All funds raised will be deployed directly in Greece for these purposes. The program furthers THI’s dual mission: crisis relief and economic development in Greece. Trees will be planted to re-balance the natural environment from the damage of the wildfires, as well as to restore the livelihoods of bee, olive, and lemon farmers destroyed by the fires.
Trees can be planted for any occasion, to mark a life event, or to celebrate or memorialize a loved one. Large programs of 500 trees ($12,500) or more may be customized in collaboration with THI.[34][20][35][36][37]
