Geonotices not updating
Hi, MusikBot II is running, but has not updated MediaWiki:Gadget-geonotice-list.js since 22 September, despite two edits to Wikipedia:Geonotice/list.json - are they incorrectly formatted? --Redrose64 🌹 (talk) 09:22, 7 October 2024 (UTC)
- @Redrose64 This appears to be some sort of Toolforge hiccup. The job literally wasn't running, and the only thing Toolforge told me was "Error". Very helpful! Lol. I tried debugging by running a one-off job, and that worked fine. That tells me indeed, Toolforge was having issues firing the job for some reason. I've reloaded the jobs configuration, so hopefully things are okay now. However I can't say for certain until further changes are made to the Geonotice config.
- While we're on the topic, maybe this is a good time to reevaluate this bot-powered system. It was only introduced because the advent of interface-admin meant most admins couldn't edit the JS page anymore, but they can still edit JSON. Since the bot was introduced, it's now possible for the Geonotice gadget itself to load the JSON page directly, eliminating the need for the bot altogether. The only downside here is validations the bot does (such as country codes, coordinates, among other things). We didn't have this validation prior to the bot, so maybe we don't care. Since the bot was introduced, I see only two instances where someone put in something invalid. Even then, I don't know if they actually utilized the bot report to fix their errors. — MusikAnimal talk 16:31, 7 October 2024 (UTC)

Tech News: 2024-41
Latest tech news from the Wikimedia technical community. Please tell other users about these changes. Not all changes will affect you. Translations are available.
Weekly highlight
- Communities can now request installation of Automoderator on their wiki. Automoderator is an automated anti-vandalism tool that reverts bad edits based on scores from the new "Revert Risk" machine learning model. You can read details about the necessary steps for installation and configuration. [1]
Updates for editors
- Translators in wikis where the mobile experience of Content Translation is available, can now customize their articles suggestion list from 41 filtering options when using the tool. This topic-based article suggestion feature makes it easy for translators to self-discover relevant articles based on their area of interest and translate them. You can try it with your mobile device. [2]
- View all 12 community-submitted tasks that were resolved last week.
Updates for technical contributors
- It is now possible for
<syntaxhighlight>
code blocks to offer readers a "Copy" button if thecopy=1
attribute is set on the tag. Thanks to SD0001 for these improvements. [3] - Customized copyright footer messages on all wikis will be updated. The new versions will use wikitext markup instead of requiring editing raw HTML. [4]
- Later this month, temporary accounts will be rolled out on several pilot wikis. The final list of the wikis will be published in the second half of the month. If you maintain any tools, bots, or gadgets on these 11 wikis, and your software is using data about IP addresses or is available for logged-out users, please check if it needs to be updated to work with temporary accounts. Guidance on how to update the code is available.
- Rate limiting has been enabled for the code review tools Gerrit and GitLab to address ongoing issues caused by malicious traffic and scraping. Clients that open too many concurrent connections will be restricted for a few minutes. This rate limiting is managed through nftables firewall rules. For more details, see Wikitech's pages on Firewall, GitLab limits and Gerrit operations.
- Five new wikis have been created:

TechnologyAdvice
Hello, I was searching for TechnologyAdvice, a Nashville-based technology marketing company that has acquired a number of prominent technology related publications in the past few years. However, I discovered that such a page had been deleted by you nine years ago ~ years before it acquired over 20 tech publications, such as: TechRepublic; eWeek; Datamation; and, Channel Insider (this page was also deleted 14 years ago). Evidently, this is not the company it was nine years ago. See:

- [https:// technologyadvice . com/about-us/ Learn More About TechnologyAdvice]
*NB: In preparing this post, it also emerged that the TechnologyAdvice dot com domain has been blacklisted...
Anyway, maybe it is time to revisit this page and potentially resurrect it. If so, is it still possible to recover the page - at least before it was blanked-out - and update it?

PERMClerk job
It looks like MusikBot's PERMClerk job might be stuck. There are quite a few completed requests that should be archived, but for some reason, the bot isn't doing that. The last time it took any action on the relevant pages was back on 7 October. – DreamRimmer (talk) 16:56, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
- Fixed This was apparently yet another Toolforge hiccup. The job was stuck. I simply killed it and all seems to be fine now. Thanks for letting me know, — MusikAnimal talk 19:51, 11 October 2024 (UTC)
- Thank you :) – DreamRimmer (talk) 00:41, 12 October 2024 (UTC)
Pinocchio (1940)
The phrase in the plot section of the article of Pinocchio (1940) is incorrect. It's "In search FOR Pinocchio", not "of Pinocchio". They kept reverting the same error for no reason. 151.46.70.7 (talk) 10:00, 13 October 2024 (UTC)
Suggestion/feature request/whatever
@JJMC89: It would be cool if the CopyPatrolBot could ignore sections with a title like "selected works/selected articles/publications/whatever". Such sections often contain the titles of published works and the copyvio detector detects that those have also been listed elsewhere which leads to a false positive. Here is an example. Thanks, Polygnotus (talk) 13:40, 13 October 2024 (UTC)
