Left and right wing extremes

Left, and right wings are often extremes in certain fields, and often some fields are attributed to left or right wing policy, which is ridiculous. Why left wing politics is typically presented as anarchism and right wing policy is presented as fascism? In Europe, you can notice that some right wing media want to present left wing policy as supporting illegal migration to European Union while right wing policy is presented by left wing media as discrimination for other nations. Why we simply can't have strong external borders without illegal migration like 50 years ago, and open "borders" in Europe (Schengen)? Eurohunter (talk) 13:19, 6 January 2024 (UTC)

Verifiability dispute at Talk:Right-wing populism

A neutral review would be appreciated on a dispute on historical-comparative content at right-wing populism over verifiability: whether the editor has met WP:Burden (or if WP:V has been correctly applied I suppose?) after I removed a large amount of content for failing WP:Verifiability. Getting the category name right

Hello. A few countries have (or had) a consultative body made up of traditional chiefs (which are not upper houses of a legislature). It would be good to have them all in a category, but I was struggling to decide what it should be called. Perhaps something like Category:Traditional consultative bodies?

The ones I can think of are:

Clarification on categories named similarly to Category:Russian nationalists - "nationalists from Russia" or "adherents of Russian nationalism"?

I've seen some categories named similarly to this that seem a bit ambiguous, such as Category:Ukrainian fascists and would like some clarification. Namely, does this category, and by extension similarly named categories, refer to "fascists from Ukraine" or "adherents of Ukrainian nationalist fascism"? While there is significant overlap between those groups, they should not be treated as one in the same. Pavel Gubarev is a good example, being a Russian nationalist fascist from Ukraine. Should he be placed in Category:Russian fascists or Category:Ukrainian fascists? I'd say that the "adherents of Ukrainian nationalist fascism" or "adherents of Russian nationalism" interpretation would make more sense, but it would be useful to have explicit clarification on this subject. Political international

Courtesy link: Talk:Political international § Original research, sourcing, title, and notability

I've tagged numerous problems at the Political international article, and some feedback at Talk would be good. The main problem is that it seems to be original research from beginning to end. I'm not even sure there's a notable topic behind it, as initial searches were not fruitful. Lots more details at the discussion I started. Normally, I'd ping a few of the top editors or recent ones but no one stood out, it just kind of grew slowly from a lot of editors over time. Ironically, purely from the tags I added just now, I'm already the #2 editor at the article. So, I'm bringing it here instead, in case anyone is interested. If not, I'll probably take it to WP:Afd after a week or so, but if there's a real topic there, I hope someone can rescue the article. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 02:56, 18 February 2024 (UTC)

Removing political position from infobox

Does anyone know why a user would make more than a dozen edits removing the political position from the pages of US political parties and put "Longstanding consensus not to include political positions for the democratic or republican parties" in their edit summary?

For reference, see [edit here]. skarz (talk) 16:30, 14 February 2024 (UTC)

It's true that both the Republican and Democratic main articles don't include political positions per consensus – so they're right about that, at least. I'm not aware of any consensus that it applies to affiliated parties, however. I'd assume they're good faith in that they think it applies to affiliates, but I'm unsure if it actually does. — Czello (music) 16:47, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
I should have been more specific - they didn't remove it from the body of the article but the infobox template on the side. skarz (talk) 16:52, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
AFAIK, the consensus to exclude from the infoboxes, covers only the federal political parties. GoodDay (talk) 16:53, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
Not going to read the massive wall of text but it would appear at a surface level that you are right. skarz (talk) 17:02, 14 February 2024 (UTC)
Hello, sorry everyone, I was the editor that started removing it. I now understand that it may not be included in the specific consensus I was talking about. I was worried it left open an area of potential bias. For example most state level democratic parties that have positions listed, put democratic state parties as center to center-left, however most state level republican parties that have positions listed put it as right-wing and far-right, and I'm worried it could be used to frame the republican party as a fascist or a neo-fascist style party. Thats all. My intentions were good! Sorry for the intrusion everyone.
That's highly problematic putting any Democratic state party as centre or centre-left. By global standards they are far from. By global standards they are clearly neo-liberal/capitalist, which would put them on the right (centrist at best). Note: being progressive on individual issues is not a particularly left-right stance. TarnishedPathtalk 08:02, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
Why is an Australian applying global standard to American politics? skarz (talk) 15:36, 17 February 2024 (UTC)
Because people other than Americans read Wikipedia and would want a reference point to what they know? TarnishedPathtalk 05:32, 27 February 2024 (UTC)
I can't seem to find anything suggesting that the English Wikipedia writes articles specifically about American politics from a global perspective. Can you show me something I can read on that topic? WP:NPOV, WP:PG, and WP:MONDIAL are no help. skarz (talk) 05:49, 27 February 2024 (UTC)

Adding Advocacy campaigns section to Global Strategy Group article

Hello, I'm an employee at the political consulting firm Global Strategy Group. I recently posted an edit request to the GSG Talk page asking editors to consider adding an Advocacy campaigns section to the article. As currently constructed, the article has plenty of information about GSG's electoral and corporate work, but not much about the polling, research, and communications work it has done on social and political issues like gun safety, abortion access, and criminal justice reform. If that topic sounds interesting to you, please take a look at my request on the GSG Talk page. (Link here.) I've done my best to write a section draft that aligns with Wikipedia's content guidelines, but I'm willing to take direction from independent editors, if they believe the draft can be improved upon.

Deletion nomination for Category:American politicians who are the sole member of their party in statewide office

I am commenting to appeal for Keep votes on this deletion entry for Category:American politicians who are the sole member of their party in statewide office. I believe it is an extremely obvious measure of the unique identity of politicians who are incentivized to be "mavericks," as well as electoral geography and power balance. Much of the reasoning for deletion relies on the nominator's as-yet unsourced insistence that categories must permanently apply to pages, rather than be subject to current events or changes in employment, like elections. Others have simply declared this plainly unique status to be non-defining. The Delete voters have been largely unresponsive, and even when they do respond, have been argumentatively selective and engage in sophistry. Thank you very much for your consideration. 1Matt20 (talk) 18:45, 17 April 2024 (UTC)

Global Strategy Group Advocacy campaigns section

Hello, I work at the political consulting firm Global Strategy Group. I'm visiting this WikiProject because it's listed at the top of the GSG Talk page. I'm hoping an editor here is available to review an edit request I placed in early March. I've been struggling mightily to find someone to take a look at it, so I would deeply appreciate anyone who takes the time.

In my request, which you can view here, I'm proposing a new Advocacy campaigns section for the article. This section covers GSG's work on social and political issues like gun safety, abortion access, and criminal justice reform. This aspect of the firm's business has been covered pretty extensively in the press, but it's not mentioned in the article at all. I'm making an effort to fix that, but given that I have a conflict of interest, I need oversight and possibly some constructive criticism from the independent editing community.

If anyone has questions or feedback, please reply to my request on the GSG Talk page. Thanks! ES at Global Strategy Group (talk) 12:50, 23 April 2024 (UTC)

British politics question

Hello, I had a question considering the UK general election has just been called today.

Currently there is an article called Labour Party leadership of Keir Starmer which details Starmer's time as the Leader of the party so far. However, all prime ministers have a 'Premiership of __' article. If Starmer does become the next prime minister (which looks likely), what should happen to the 'leadership' article? Should it be merged into the 'Premiership' article or kept separate as an article on his time in opposition? It is already quite long as it is. Thanks Michaeldble (talk) 21:39, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Infobox key positions parameter

I've noticed that a new convention has formed regarding the ideology parameter, which is to only put one or two all-encompassing ideologies (see Labour Party (UK)). It used to be the case that the ideology parameter had five or so more specific entries that gave the reader a good impression of the party at a glance (see Bharatiya Janata Party).

In light of this, I think there should be a 'key positions' parameter which has, say maximum five entries which editors agree on, including regarding their order, and they would be based on citations from recent academia. The policy on this could distinguish between social, economic, national, and international positions to ensure a wide coverage. A national one could be say Unionism for a UK party, and an international one could be Euroscepticism for a European party. Alexanderkowal (talk) 13:06, 23 May 2024 (UTC)

Article is as much publicity for a BLP as anything else. And promoting Nigeria. Doug Weller talk 08:53, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Honestly it could go straight to AfD. It appears to be a non-notable ideology promoted in a non-notable dissertation and then published into a non-notable book. Disproportionate weight for one individual's personal theory which hasn't received substaintal recognition outside of his own writings. — Czello (music) 09:05, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
@Czello If there is a book. Ok. Doug Weller talk 10:17, 22 May 2024 (UTC)
Yes, is there a book? In the Gateway Echo in 2020, a book called "Tupocracy: Leadership by example for the Church and Civil society" is described, with special mention of a 4th edition in 2018. But I can't find it actually for sale anywhere, or find the publisher, or an ISBN. Can anybody help? I'd like to AfD Tupocracy, but knowing about the book would be helpful. Does it exist? Is it self-published? Does it have an ISBN? Bishonen | tålk 15:32, 22 May 2024 (UTC).
I'm talking about the book that's mentioned in the article, here. I wasn't aware of the one you mentioned – so there are at least two. Both are written by the man who coined the term, though, so I'm not sure it improves notability. — Czello (music) 17:16, 22 May 2024 (UTC)

Request input on comparative government topic: Creating 'branches of government' to de-clutter 'separation of powers'

Hi!

'Branches of government' is currently a redirect to separation of powers. I think readers and editors would be better served by the development of 'branches of government' (or a similarly named article) as a separate topic.

A descriptive, empirical taxonomy of institutional divisions of different countries' governments is a worthwhile endeavor in comparative government. But it is such a large topic on its own that it seriously unbalances and unduly lengthens the article on separation of powers. I would like to re-focus the latter article on the principle propounded by political philosophers, its reception by constitutions, and its technical implementation in constitutional law.

Of course, the principle of separating powers is the reason for the existence of different arms of government; but I think the two subjects need to be notionally distinguished. All the more so since their conflation is, to my mind, at the root of the poor quality (start class) of the 'separation of powers' article.

There is certainly a lot of interest in the institutional structure and in branches of government as a topic—just see the recent AfC request for a separate 'executive branch of the United States federal government' article. I think 'branches of government' is definitely deserving and capable of being its own article.

What do you think? I'd be glad of your input on my proposal (at the separation of powers talk page). §§ LegFun §§ talk §§ 21:24, 24 May 2024 (UTC)

Officeholder tables

Hello, I'd be interested in hearing your opinions concerning officeholder tables. There is some difference of opinion concerning placement of elections in tables. As I see it, tables should follow a logical structure. Going from most common/important information to least common/important information, to allow readers to consistency across all officeholder tables. Across all officeholder tables you can expect the central information of NAME and some type of DATES. This is in principale the only information needed, everything else is used to expand and explain these two pieces of information.

Name Dates
Bob 1910-1930
Jeff 1930-1950

All political tables will include political party, and only some of them will include elections. Hence it makes sense to have the layout follow this logic. Otherwise, you end up with pages like List of presidents of the Dominican Republic, List of heads of state of Ghana and List of heads of state of Sierra Leone, where every table changes layout from the pervious. With inconsistency across all officeholder tables. @Friendlyhistorian: has a different opinion, but I will let him make his own points. I look forward to hearing your opinions. Infobox legislative election suggested edit

Hi editors. I have started a discussion at Template talk:Infobox legislative election#Suggested changes to change possible row headers for future election, suggesting an edit that would allow any page using Template:Infobox legislative election for a future election to say "seats at dissolution" or list the number of seats won at the last election when the "ongoing" parameter in the template is set to "yes". --TedEdwards 18:55, 13 June 2024 (UTC)

Requesting assistance editing Ohio State University protest article.

I recently created an article detailing the college protests at Ohio State University. After this article was made extended-protected, I lost my ability to edit the article because I do not have EP permissions. Substantial details are missing from this article, so until I regain my permissions, I have been adding suggestions to the talk page of this article. But no one has been implementing my suggestions on the talk page, despite the fact they are supported by multiple sources and add significant missing details from the article.

If members of this community could please visit the talk page of this article and implement my requested changes, this would be deeply appreciated. Thank you! Onlineone22 (talk) 19:18, 20 June 2024 (UTC)

Task force for college campus activism

Hello! I'm writing to ask if there would be any interest in starting up a task force for articles related to college campus activism? I'm a librarian with a group of approximately 5-6 other librarians who are interested in working on content along these lines, and it was suggested to us that we should see if there is space within WikiProject Politics for our work. Thanks for sharing your thoughts. Emjackson42 (talk) 13:31, 23 July 2024 (UTC)

Hi Emjackson42, if you have a number of participants already I encourage you to start collaborating without feeling the need to wait for a formal task force. Do you have an idea of what the scope of the work would be, particular goals, maybe tentative lists of target articles and/or resources to be used? CMD (talk) 11:00, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

Fianna Fáil Local Councillors

Fianna Fáil Local Councillors. I have an issue to raise with the wider Wikipedia Community. I personally created a Wikipedia Article for a Padraig McNally and user Spleodrach decided himself/herself to use the gender neutral Wikipedia terminology to delete it despite my opposition during a debate. The individual concerned was a former Cathaoirleach of Monaghan County Council and President of the AILG. I still object to this decision by Spleodrach to delete the article on his/her own initiative and ask the wider Wikipedia community to revert it back. Furthermore it should be added to Former Fianna Fáil Local Councillors. Someone has decided to add people who are current and deceased/retired or people who have resigned from the Fianna Fáil party to this list. All should be in the correct category of Former Fianna Fáil Local Councillors if they no longer hold elected officec for that party. While a Wikipedia editor I am also one myself and would happily join the likes of Padraig MacNally, Paudge Brennan, Bertie Ahern, Robert Briscoe, Mary Shields (whose article I created) in that correct category. I await the decision of the wider community. However as I do not have the ego of a small sub-Saharan political state I will not be creating a wikipedia page about myself while I already have my own userpage here for sometime. Devite (talk) 04:09, 21 July 2024 (UTC)

Since my post here user Spleodrach has taken upon himself/herself to police or vandalise edits of mine to other Irish article of a political nature and some article I have edited to do with epilepsy have been edited also. Is there a pattern here? I petition for this user to be called out for not having answered my challenge, having ignored it and further having then had the audacity to edit/delete edits of mine without having the curtesy to discuss them here first as I am giving the opportunity to him/her. As an editor of Wiki this is childish behaviour and not on regardless of how old he/she is. Devite (talk) 22:47, 23 July 2024 (UTC)
Hi @Devite:, I only came across this message now because you did not ping me or leave a message on my talk page. Padraig McNally article was deleted by consensus, see Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pádraig McNally. You said that "user Spleodrach decided himself/herself to use the gender neutral Wikipedia terminology to delete it despite my opposition during a debate". What is "gender neutral Wikipedia terminology", please explain? I !voted to delete, as I thought the article did not meet the criteria for politicians. Another editor proposed the article for deletion, and several others also !voted to delete, and an admin closed the debate as delete. so why do you single me out? The article was deleted by wikipedia consensus, the is the wikipedia way. Then you talk about Former Fianna Fáil Local Councillors, which I don't quite follow, maybe you could explain that further?
Furthremore, you go to accuse me of vandalism and of being childish. Firstly, can you please remain WP:CIVIL, and secondly, explain where I have vandalised articles? You mention something about epilepsy but I have not edited any such article recently. Apparently I also "had the audacity to edit/delete edits of mine", well this is how wikipedia works, no one owns articles, other editors can and will edit your edits, see recent edits at Frank Aiken, for example. Again, I am a few days late replying because you didn't tag me, but also because I don't answer to you personally. Please remain civil, and try to calm down. Spleodrach (talk) 08:02, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
I'm perfectly calm. Padraig McNally is a former Fianna Fáil elected Councillor and a former President of the Association of Irish Local Government. Therefore he'd be a good addition for the group of either Fianna Fáil elected or unelected Fianna Fáil Councillors. Né'st ce pas vrai? Níl sé sin ceart? Cad a cheapain sibh that is those of you who voted to delete his article? He was a Councillor in Monaghan from c.1979-2019 I think. Perhaps check the data. I check data and facts all the time me. I vote for the article to be re-instated now. What do you all think? Devite (talk) 13:56, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
user Spleodrach decided...to delete it...on his/her own initiative
That is not what happened. No one Wikipedia user can delete any article. Articles are nominated for deletion and then any user frequenting Wikipedia:Articles for deletion can voice their opinion on it.
User @Iveagh Gardens nominated the article for deletion (not Spleodrach) and Users @Broc, @Normanhunter2 and @Guliolopez were also of the view that the article didn't meet the criteria for a standalone Wikipedia article. You said "I await the decision of the wider community"...that was a decision by the wider community.
While a Wikipedia editor I am also one myself and would happily join the likes of (other politicians)... I will not be creating a wikipedia page about myself
This comment was odd so I looked at your user page, which states:
"I am an...recently elected public-representative"
Devite, you might be too close for comfort on this topic. See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest for further information. CeltBrowne (talk) 12:36, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
Spare me. Conflict of interest. I also write and edit pieces on Scottish and Northern Ireland elections also and am also a Wikipedia editor on health. Don't pigeon-hole me. Devite (talk) 13:57, 24 July 2024 (UTC)
Thanks for the ping. I’m happy to take full responsibility for the proposal to delete the article for Pádraig McNally: Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Pádraig McNally. I’m not sure what that has to do specifically with Spleodrach, more than any other contributor to that discussion. Whenever an article is proposed for deletion, there’s an opportunity to add to the article to ensure it passes the notability criteria. Local councillors don’t pass that, and given the rotating chair nature of the office, being Cathaoirleach for doesn’t either, IMHO. The discussion remained open for a week after your own contribution, and for five days after my response to yours. It was then closed by an uninvolved administrator. All standard processes were followed. There is a process of Wikipedia:Deletion Review if you have concerns about what occurred in the case of McNally.
FWIW, WT:IE might have been a better place to raise concerns, being an Ireland-specific discussion space. Iveagh Gardens (talk) 14:01, 24 July 2024 (UTC)

Tables of contesting parties

Hello. Should a table summarizing the basic informations of contesting parties be kept on election pages? Or should they be deleted entirely if they cover too many small parties? Please join the discussion on the talk page of the next Irish general election. Cordially. Aréat (talk) 04:43, 11 October 2024 (UTC)

Substantial omissions from edit summaries

An editor has failing to mention content removals in edit summaries. These edits added substantially to article wordcounts, so it is not obvious from the page history that content has been removed.

I'd like to be clear that these content removals were done among genuinely useful edits, and I've talked to the editor about the purpose of edit summaries.

The removed content seems to be stuff the PRC doesn't like; Ai Weiwei, and domestic political protest, and historic domestic ethnic diversity, and probably some content reflecting on national space programs, etc.. I'm not sure how far back the problem goes; not more than dozens to hundreds of edits are affected.

As these removals of controversial content haven't had the level of peer scrutiny that they would likely have had had they been correctly described, could these edits get some scrutiny now, please? Thanks! HLHJ (talk) 19:38, 13 October 2024 (UTC)
