Base exchange refers to a large department store-like shop that is set up on US military bases, and is normally nicknamed the BX. They are generally run by AAFES, a company that employs civilians to provide subsidised food, clothing and consumer goods to US military personnel, both at home and abroad. The USN stores are known as NEXs whilst the army call theirs the PX.
