1958 Portuguese presidential election
Presidential elections were held in Portugal on June 8, 1958 under the supervision of the incumbent Estado Novo regime. Due to difficulties in cooperation with prime minister Antonio Salazar, incumbent president Craveiro Lopes had stated he had no intention of seeking another term. The democratic opposition backed independent general Humberto Delgado in an attempt to challenge the regime. The official tally was 52,6% of the votes in favor of regime candidate, naval minister Americo Thomaz, with about 25% for Delgado, with excessive complaints of vote fraud and harassment of Delgado's supporters by the PIDE[1]. The results nevertheless shocked the dictatorship and in 1959, the responsibility to elect president was transferred from the portuguese people to the National Assembly of Portugal.
