The CSI College of Engineering is situated in the Ketti Valley. It is 2 km off the Coonoor-Ooty highway from a point on the highway known as Yellanahalli. Yellanahalli is 12 km beyond Coonoor and 10 km before Ooty on the Coonoor-Ooty highway.[2]
The institution is a self-financed,[3] Christian minority institution.[3] It is run by the CSI Coimbatore Diocese and the current Bishop of the Diocese is the Chairman and Correspondent of the Institution. The institution is approved by the AICTE, New Delhi and affiliated to the Anna University, Chennai. The institution was started in the year 1998.
The current Principal of the Institution is Dr. S. J. Jeyapaulan, who has been the head of the Institution since its conception. The Rt. Rev. M. Dorai is the Chairman and Correspondent of the Institution since he is the current bishop in Coimbatore.[4] The institution is well-recognised by its peers and locals in the surrounding Nilgiris district, although this may be because this is the only Engineering institution in the district which is affiliated to the Anna University.
Academics
The institution offers bachelor's courses in the following streams of Engineering:
- B. E. in Computer Science and Engineering
- B. E. in Electrical and Electronics Engineering
- B. E. in Mechanical Engineering
- B. Tech. in Information Technology
- B. E. in Electronics and communication engineering
The institution is divided among the following four departments:
- General Sciences, headed by Prof. A. Kennedy (Department of Physics)
- Department of Computer Science & Engineering headed by Prof. Rama Krishna Pillay
- Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, headed by Prof. Mohankumar
- Department of Mechanical Engineering, headed by Prof. T. V. Christy (Vice-Principal)
- Department of Information technology headed by Prof. Usha Ruby
- Department of Electronics & Communication headed by Prof. Komathy Vanitha
Each of the departments have their own separate laboratories and classrooms to accommodate the students. Each department also has its own Students' Association, through which various activities of the departments are carried out annually. Technical symposia, Industrial visits, educational trips, guest lectures and special events are few of the activities carried out by the various Students' Associations.
The graduation ceremony for the fifth batch of students (2002-2006) was held in the college in March 2007.[5] The event was presided over by the President of SIEMA, C.R. Shanmugasundaram.[5]
Department of Computer Science
Headed by Prof. col.Rama Krishna Pillai since late 2007, this department has over 250 students. The department maintains 2 full-fledged computer labs, 1 multimedia lab and a recently added 'project' lab. The DevLine Association is run by the students of the department, with assistance from the staff and the head of the Department. DevLine is responsible for conducting the annual symposium and for releasing the annual magazine for the department.
Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering
Headed by Prof. Surendra , this department has a little over 200 students. The department houses various laboratories which aids the students in completing their requirements as per the Anna University Syllabus. The Electro Quasars is the students' association of the department. They take the responsibility for the various activities of the department, under the guidance of the staff and the leadership of Mr. Mohankumar.
Department of Mechanical Engineering
Headed by Prof. T. V. Christy since July 2003, this department has nearly 400 students. The Mechanical Engineering Students' Association (MESA) is responsible for the student activities of the department. The annual symposium Mexplore is held every year in the month of January/February.[6] Mexplore '06 was different from the previous editions as it included a variety of guest lectures from notable personalities in the field of Mechanical Engineering and encouraged hardware presentations of self-made projects as opposed to the usual Paper presentations. The event also heralded another milestone with Mr. Devaneyan of the EEE department displayed and demonstrated an electric two-wheeler,[6] which was built completely independently.
Exam Cell
The college Exam cell Co-ordinated by Prof.B. Sanjay Gandhi, Mechanical Engineering Department and the Exam Cell members are Mr.Karthick Lect/EEE, Mr.B.Santhosh Kumar Lect/CSE, Mr.Pratab Lect/ MECH, Mr. J.Dominc Xavier Lect/ S&H and Mrs. Annie beaseant. From the past six years successfully co-ordinated by Prof. Sanjay Gandhi and the accounts maintenance appreciated by Anna University, Chennai. Now Prof. Sanjay Gandhi is the Nodal Officer for Anna university, Coimbatore colleges in nilgiris.
Residential Facilities
The Institution is mainly a residential facility with separate hostels to accommodate the men and women students. A section of the Men's hostel is completely separated from the rest of the structure so as to enable first year students to live without the fear of ragging. Wardens and Asst. Wardens are present for the men and the women, however, the Principal is considered the Chief Warden of the Hostels.
Explanation of Logo
The institution has an elaborate explanation for the logo and emblem, which incorporates many concepts. According to the explanation available on the institutional website,[7] the Alpha and Omega symbolise the nature of God as represented by Christianity. The Omega logo also signifies the electromagnetic field, while a carter pin inside the alpha logo denotes the simple yet vital mechanical device.
Social Engagement
Under the tutelage of the faculty of the Institution, the students constantly engage in activities which are beneficial to the society.
- The College hosts a NCC wing headed by Lt.V.Prakash which was started in the year 2002 which has become very important in molding the character and imparts a dynamic outlook to the college students.The NCC wing builds great character qualities which enables the cadets to become good leaders and useful citizens for the service of the nation .The NCC cadets attend several camps(Combined Annual Training Camp,Army Attachment Camp,National Integration Camp) and campaigns conducted every year which gives the students a very broad outlook of the army life and gives them an opportunity to interact and compete with several other cadets across the country.
- An NSS camp is conducted in one of the neighbouring villages every year. In 2005, the ten day camp was situated in Nedugalcombai, an Irumba tribal village.[8] Such camps involve sanitising, implementing new facilities and structures and also, conducting cultural engagement events and activities for the tribals.[8]
- The Youth Red Cross wing of the Institution organised an extensive blood donation camp in August 2004, enlisting the aid of the Coimbatore based K. G. Hospital.[9] The Blood Donation camp was considered a success as it sensitised the students of the Institution toward the need for blood donation. Over 200 students and 25 members of the faculty participated in the event.[9]
- A Prayer Cell, run completely by the students functions in the College. The student body of the Prayer Cell meets every Saturday after classes are over. The Prayer Cell also conducts annual functions to commemorate its inception, Christmas and a farewell event for the batch of students leaving the Institution that year.
- A two-day workshop on Examination Reforms was conducted in September, 2005.[10]
