"The Eleventh Hour"[1] is an episode of British science fiction television series Doctor Who. It was first broadcast on BBC One and BBC HD on 3 April 2010.[7] This was the first full episode to star Matt Smith as the Doctor, and Karen Gillan as companion Amy Pond.

Plot

The Doctor, without time to recover from his recent regeneration, meets orphan girl and new companion Amy Pond. Together they have twenty minutes to save the world from the Atraxi, a group of galactic policemen.[8]

The Atraxi are hunting for a fugitive (Prisoner zero) who is hiding from them in Amy's house in a hidden room hidden by a perception filter affect similar to that of the Tardis (observers unconciously ignore it). The fugitive can change into different forms by creating a form of phsycic connection which puts the person into a coma. This connection often reflects what the victim is thinking of. E.g. Amy Pond thinking of herself as a child with the doctor.

At the end of the episode, Amy leaves for adventures with the doctor, provided he can have her back by the next day. It is revealed that she has a wedding dress in her bedroom, implying the next day is her wedding day.

Continuity

In trying to signal the Atraxi ship, the Tenth Doctor's sonic screwdriver is destroyed. The end of the episode also saw the first appearance of the new TARDIS design.[8] Whilst proving Earth is protected to the Atraxi, flashbacks included not just moments from the New series but also those from the classics including The Sea Devils, New Series monsters including The Cybermen, The Daleks, The Reapers.

Production

Filming

Scenes with Amy Pond in a police uniform and the Eleventh Doctor still in the Tenth Doctor's outfit were shot in Cardiff in October 2009.[9][10]

Some scenes based in the fictional village of Leadworth were filmed on the Cathedral Green, Llandaff, Cardiff, on 7 October.[8]

Broadcast

International broadcast

This episode is planned to be shown in the US on BBC America on 17 April 2010[11] and in Canada on the same date on Space.[12]

In Australia, this episode is to be aired on ABC's iView service on 16 April 2010 before being shown on ABC1 on 18 April 2010.[13]

Trailers

As of 27 March 2010, two clips are available. One shows the opening scene, which features the Doctor hanging from the TARDIS doorway as it flies out of control over London with the sonic screwdriver between his teeth. A second shows the Doctor and a young Amy Pond with the TARDIS, explaining it is a time machine and telling her that he will be back in five minutes.[14]

DVD release

A Region 2 DVD and Blu-ray[15] containing this episode together with "The Beast Below", "Victory of the Daleks" and special features is planned to be available from 7 June 2010.[16]
