Choi Soo-young (Korean: 최수영; born February 10, 1990), known by her stage name Sooyoung (Korean: 수영), is a South Korean singer, dancer, actress, TV presenter, model, and radio DJ. She is known as a member of the nine-member girl group Girls' Generation.
Biography
Sooyoung was born in South Korea on February 10, 1990. She was discovered on SM Casting System via the 2000 SM Open Audition. She then auditioned for the 2002 Korea-Japan Ultra Idol Duo Audition and won first place, marking her debut into the Japanese music scene with the band Route 0.[1]
Sooyoung graduated from Jungshin Women High School (Template:Lang-ko) in 2009 and is currently taking up Performing Arts major in Theater at Chung-Ang University.[2]
Musical career
Debut in Japan
After garnering first place in the 2002 Korea-Japan Ultra Idol Duo, Sooyoung was sent to Japan and debuted as a member of the duo Route 0, alongside Marina Takahashi.[1] The band released three singles "Waku! Waku! It's Love",[3] "Start",[3] and "Painting".[3]
Girls' Generation
Solo releases
Sooyoung, along with various SM artists like BoA, Shinhwa, and The Grace, sang songs for the soundtrack of the anime Inuyasha's Korean Version. She sang the song "I Am", which is the third opening song of the anime.[citation needed]
She and fellow SNSD member Yuri sang the trot song "Kkok" (Korean: "꼭") for the opening theme of the TV miniseries Working Mom (Korean: [워킹 맘] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help)) on 2008.[4][5] She was also featured in "Feeling Only You" (Template:Lang-ko) by The Blue (Kim Min-Jong & Son Ji-Chang), alongside bandmate Tiffany.[6][7]
Acting career
Sooyoung played a part in the 2007 KBS sitcom Unstoppable Marriage (Template:Lang-ko), alongside co-band mate Yuri.[citation needed] Apart from this, she co-starred with Lee Yeonhee and Kangin on the 2008 Movie Hello Schoolgirl (Template:Lang-ko; Sunjeong Manhwa) where she played the character of Jeong Da-jeong.[citation needed]
On March 7, 2010 she played a cameo role on SBS "Oh My Lady!" starring Choi Siwon and Chae Rim with Jessica and Hyoyeon.[8]
MC career
Sooyoung was also a VJ of the 2005 M.Net Hello Chat, alongside Kangin of Super Junior. Prior to her debut as a member of Girls' Generation, she worked as a radio DJ with Super Junior's Sungmin on DMB ChunBangJiChuk Radio (Korean: 천방지축 라디오; Reckless Radio). She worked on Chunji from July 2007 to January 2008.
Also she was a presenter for MBC TV show program Fantastic Duo (Template:Lang-ko) along with Oh Sang-Jin (Korean: 오상진).[9]
Sooyoung also appeared in "SEOUL", South Korea's 2009 tourism advertising music video[10] and was a consistent guest on the 2010 variety game show Oh! Brothers. She replaced Yuri in an episode of KBS2's reality show Invincible Youth.[11]
Modeling
Shortly after her return from Japan, she appeared in a Samsung AnyCall CF with Park Jung-Ah (Korean: 박정아) in 2003. Prior to her debut as a member of Girls' Generation, Sooyoung modeled with Route 0 bandmate Takahashi for Chubbygang Clothing Line on 2003.[citation needed] She was also an endorser for Skoolooks Uniform Model in 2004 along with Jang Geun-suk.[citation needed]
Sooyoung, together with band mate Yoona, modeled for the '08-09 F/W SFAA Seoul Collection - Lee Joo-Young Fashion Show' at Seoul Hakyohul Exhibition Hall on March 20, 2008.[12]
She had a photoshoot, with Seohyun and Yuri, for QTV's Photographer Audition Survival program 'Photographer'. The photoshoot, entitled 'Dreaming Water', is a joint campaign by Cosmopolitan Magazine and UNICEF to promote the preservation of water for a clean environment.[13]
On March 29, 2010, Sooyoung, along with Taeyeon, Yuri, Yoona, and Seohyun, was hired by Nintendo Korea as campaign models for the portable game console, Nintendo DSi.[14]
On April 27, 2010 Sooyoung along with Tiffany and Yuri had a commercial for an upcoming CF for Biotherm.
