WCGX (106.7 FM) — better known as Gen-X Radio — is a commercial radio station in Columbus, Ohio currently owned by Clear Channel Communications and broadcasting a 90's hits music format.
Station History
WMRN-FM had served the nearby Marion, Ohio area at 106.9 MHz with a country music format under the on-air moniker "Buckeye Country 107". The country format moved to the home of the former WDIF-FM at 94.3 MHz, where the WMRN-FM call letters returned in January 2008.
On December 1, 2007 the former 106.9 frequency moved to 106.7 and relicensed to Dublin, Ohio, where it began targeting the Columbus radio market. Prior to the announced launch, there were several domains registered by Clear Channel, which was done to keep listeners guessing, along with stunting consisting of television theme songs being played on-air.
On December 13, 2007 at 12 noon EST, WRXS officially unveiled its true format, Modern Rock as "Radio 106.7"[1][2]. The first song played on Radio 106.7 was "Radio, Radio" by Elvis Costello.
When Radio 106.7 first started, it's presentation heavily centered on modern rock music from the 1990s, as well as featuring selected songs from the mid 1970s through the end of the 1980s as well as current product. Overall, the station came across as "lighter" than typical Modern Rock radio stations. This type of presentation is highly similar to those at several other Clear Channel operations in Philadelphia, Grand Rapids, MI, and Hartford, CT. But on May 2nd, 2009, the station tweaked its format by dropping the lighter alternative music and adding more hard rock to its rotation to protect it from indie alternative station WWCD (CD101). On January 7, 2010 the station added Rover's Morning Glory to its morning lineup.
On June 28, 2010 the station switched to a 90's pop/rock centered format with the title Gen X Radio, and changed their call letters from WRXS to WCGX, also canceling Rover in the process. The first song played in the new format was "Get Ready For This" by 2 Unlimited.
