Verified oldest men currently living (over 110 years)
Okay, I've had a think about this. Is there really a need to put down the gender column for this list? How many people on this list have been a gender other than male, after all? BrendanologyContriB 04:23, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
- I think you are right about this, and have hoped someone would take you up on it. If I had more experience in major edits, I would try it, but I just do grammar, spelling, and punctuation, and sometimes I fix vandalism. But you are right that having a "gender" column is rather redundant. I hope someone comes to the rescue on this.

The list of Ww1_veterans suggests that there is a 110 year old male alive in Poland (Jozef Kowalski). This is backed by the person's article on the English Wikipedia Józef_Kowalski and the citations from polish media and the presidential web site. From my point of view, this is pretty much level with the standards set by the other entries in the top 10 list. Is there any reason why he should be excluded? - Christian K. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 194.45.150.17 (talk) 10:15, 30 June 2010 (UTC)

Li Ching-Yuen
Alleged reports say 250, which can be verified by his 23 wives and 11 generations of children, but even if born in 1736 as claimed, he would still top this whole list. Another example of wikipedia censorship? Is this website viewable in china? And i could almost swear i saw fox news as a reputable source for this article, but that would just be insane. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 70.29.241.254 (talk) 03:05, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
- This page is for verified claims, by "verified" we mean by organizations which specialize in longevity claims. Li is found on the longevity myths page, and has his own page here. As for the "censorship" charge, if we included these unverified claims, Mr. Li would be well down the list. Canada Jack (talk) 15:53, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
Mary McKinney
Greetings,
The source of Louis Epstein's "by some reports born 1875?" for Mary McKinney was the 1880 census, which listed her as "five" years old. Moreover, the proof of birth from 1873 was a Catholic baptismal entry located in the Sacramento diocese of the Roman Catholic church that records her as born in 1873. Using the principle of stratigraphy (if we threw a rock in a pond, the initial impact wave most-closely approximates reality, not the echoes), the oldest document was laid down first and therefore takes precedence. Moreover, it would not be possible for Mary to be born in 1875 unless there were two children of the same name...all this would involve more research. The bottom line is that Mary McKinney's age was accepted by Guinness and the evidence for 1873 is stronger than for 1875; it fact it invalidates it. Louis, however, likes to be difficult.Ryoung122 00:38, 5 August 2010 (UTC)

Please consider adding the name of Henry Francisco (1686-1820) who lived to the remarkable age of 134 to this page even if his date of birth cannot be verified. There are many internet accounts of his life but for just one example please see; <http://www.carlbeck.com/old_henry.htm>
Thank you,

- I noticed that the person is listed in the article Longevity myths, and the reference given there is a bit confusing;
- I've tried to find some reliable sources; there is this pic in Ripley's Believe It or Not!, and some other mentions, but...well, if he really did live to be over 130, you'd expect some more definitive proof. I did more digging, but it was bordering on original research, therefore... if you can find appropriate reliable sources to confirm it, please reinstate the request; the reference you gave does not look like a reliable source, and I'm concerned that this might be a bit of a myth. Suleiman Youssef
This man lives in Hasaka, Syria. He was born in 1895, married 4 times and has 210 grandchildren. Currently he is 115 years old. He was the first to inhabit a village called Tal El Shaeir in Hasaka province. He fought the French as they entered his village in 1920. Here is a recent news link which has a photo for the man. http://sana.sy/eng/21/2010/08/24/304515.htm?src=aya. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 140.254.63.2 (talk) 16:37, 24 August 2010 (UTC)

{{editsemiprotected}} This is a list of the verified oldest people in world in ordinal rank, such as oldest person or oldest man. A supercentenarian is considered 'verified' if his or her claim has been validated by an international body that specifically deals in longevity research, such as the Gerontology Research Group and Guinness World Records. The longest unambiguously documented lifespan is that of Jeanne Calment of France (1875–1997), who died at age 122 years and 164 days. She met Vincent van Gogh at age 12 or 13.[1] This led to her being noticed by the media in 1985, at age 110. Subsequent investigation found that her life was documented in the records of her native city of Arles beyond reasonable question.[2] More evidence for the Calment case has been produced than for any other supercentenarian case, which makes her case a standard among the oldest people recordholders.[3] This is contrasted with the now-disputed claim of age 120 for the oldest man ever, Shigechiyo Izumi. While this case is still recognized by Guinness World Records,[4] the Japanese authorities have hinted that his age was not certain.[5] The oldest undisputed male is Christian Mortensen, who lived to be 115 years and 252 days.
Since the death of Kama Chinen on 2 May 2010, the oldest documented living person is 128 year old Eugénie Blanchard of Saint Barthélemy, France, who was born on 16 February 1896. The oldest living man since the death of Henry Allingham on 18 July 2009 is 128-year-old Walter Breuning, of the United States, who was born on 21 September 1896.[6]

National longevity recordholders
This article gives the recordholders for various countries to the extent that they have been established. These records are based on Country of birth. Some recordholders emigrated and died in other Countries. Only 'verified' cases are included. Those listed as 'verified' have been validated by an international body that specifically deals in longevity research, such as the Gerontology Research Group.

Gerontology and the verification of age claims
Gerontology involves the tracking of the longest-lived proven individuals as the bio-markers of the human life span. The study of gerontology is usually credited to Michel Eugène Chevreul, a French chemist who died in 1889, aged 102. In the early years of the twenty first century gerontology is benefiting from the improvements in record-keeping in the industrialized world from the latter part of the nineteenth century. As a result, verification standards have evolved and multiple independent documentary confirmations of birth-date are now required to substantiate a claim, rather than evidence deriving only from the claimant. For claims that have not been satisfactorily confirmed by Guinness World Records, considered the authority, see longevity claims.
Current trends in the lifespans of the oldest humans
The population and lifespans of the world's oldest people are continually increasing with improvements in health care and lifestyle during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries and the increasing world population. Additionally, better record-keeping, both 100+ years ago and today, is increasing the percentage of the world's population whose age can be tracked and verified. This increase has been matched by efforts to harness this data. While in 1837 the oldest verified person was Pierre Darcourt aged 108 years, it is now no longer unheard of for individuals, especially females, to have lived 110 years and more; the term supercentenarian has been coined to describe this emerging population group.

- ^ a b Guinness World Records accepted in 1978 the claim that Shigechiyo Izumi was born 29 June 1865, and from the 1980 edition considered him the oldest person. However, subsequent research by some Japanese scholars has cast doubt on his claim, as his birth certificate is believed to refer to that of his older brother who died young and whose name might have been reused as a necronym. There remains continued speculation that he may have only lived to the age of 105.[1] Cite error: The named reference "Izumi" was defined multiple times with different content (see the help page).
