Easterfest
Easterfest (previously known as the Australian Gospel Music Festival) is a three-day music festival held in Toowoomba, Australia.
Easterfest is the largest festival in Toowoomba and claimed to be the largest drug and alcohol free festival in Australia.
The first festival was held in 1999, with a mixture of successful and unsuccessful events. In 2001, the festival re-focused by holding most events in Queen’s Park (previously, events were held in multiple venues throughout the city). Since the initial move to Queen’s Park, the festival has grown and moved back to multiple venues, including the streets. In 2009 it was announced that Easterfest would launch a new festival in 2010 called Easterfest City[1].
During the Easter weekend, most of Queen’s Park and some of Toowoomba's CBD is converted into an event precinct, with venue and residential tents, stages and other attractions. During the event setup and packdown parts of Queen's Park are inaccessible to the general public.
Festival History
The festival is mostly held in Queen’s Park: other venues include The Empire Theatre, Grand Central Shopping Centre, local churches and Toowoomba's CBD.[3].
In 2004, Guy Sebastian was a headline act at Easterfest (formerly known as the Australian Gospel Music Festival or AGMF 2004.)[4].[5] Guy Sebastian would become one of the first of a long list of 'cross-over' artists to perform at Easterfest including Switchfoot, [[New Empire], Fahrenheit 43 & Michael Paynter.
Over 40,000 people attended the ticketed and free events during three-day festival in 2005[6], and over 20,000 tickets were sold in 2006. The 2010 tally has not been confirmed, however it was estimated to be the largest Easterfest so far[7].
