Brahmeshwar Singh alias Mukhiya; a.k.a Butcher of Bihar was a caste based militia in Bihar. Singh was reported to be brutal, founder & head of militia Ranvir Sena that killed over 300 people.
It is claimed that Singh himself might not have killed anyone but incited Ranvir Sena members that lead to worst caste-based violence seen in India[1].
On 01st Jun 2012, Singh was murdered by unidentified gunmen[3].
Murder & aftermath
On 01st Jun, Singh was on a morning walk at 04:30 am near his home. Reportedly, around six armed men carrying sophisticated weapons shot Singh several times. Murder resulted in public unrest and severe rioting in Bihar. Several thousand people burnt the circuit house, BDO's office, several government vehicles, damaged railway offices and paralysed train movement on the main Howrah-Delhi route[3]
Ranvir Sena
Ranvir Sena was formed by Singh, landlords & Bhumihars in 1994 to promote the upper caste and to battle growing Naxalite activism in Bihar. Ranvir Sena was also termed as 'The army of the brave'.
It is believed that Ranvir Sena was formed due to a fight between landlords and Communist party activists in which one person was killed[1].
The Ranvir Sena has been involved in several massacres of Dalits in central Bihar. To check the increase in Dalit population, Ranvir Sena used to target and attack pregnant women & children specifically.[4]
