Francis Cugat
Francis Cugat also known as Francisco Coradal-Cougat[1](born 1893—1981[citation needed]) was an portrait, poster and book jacket artist whose most famous work was the original 1925 cover of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.[2]
Biography
Little is known of Cugat other than that he was born in Spain in 1893 and was the older brother of bandleader Xavier Cugat.[3] The Cugat family emigrated to Cuba in 1903.[4] Cugat created distinctive, stylized theatre cards for several opera personalities in the period 1915-197 including Lucien Muratore, Rosa Raisa and Giacomo Rimini.[5] It is also known that at one time, Francis was a designer in Hollywood for Douglas Fairbanks and had a 1942 show in New York, well after his famous work for The Great Gatsby. He was credited for technical work on sixty-eight Hollywood films.[6][3]
