A non-binding referendum on ending conscription was held in Austria on 20 January 2013. It was the first nationwide non-binding referendum (Volksbefragung) since the establishment of the Republic in 1945. Previous referendums had been limited to local issues. Though constitutionally not obliged to act on, both parties in government have stated, that they will honour the results.

Around 60% of voters rejected a proposal, which would have ended conscription and introduced a professional army.
