Wikidata weekly summary #50

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Development
    • Rolled out new code on wikidata.org. The new stuff you probably care about is:
      • Improved references. They can now have multiple lines. This should make references much more useful. You can now have one reference with for example values for each of the properties "book", "author", "page" to describe one source.
      • Fixed the prev/next links in diff view (bugzilla:45821)
      • d:Special:EntitiesWithoutLabel now lets you filter by language and entity type
    • Widget to add language links on the Wikipedias directly: added setting to enable/disable it per wiki and made it available for logged-in users only
    • Widget to add language links on the Wikipedias directly: improved layout / size
    • Made it so that the “edit links” link on Wikipedia is also shown when the corresponding item only has a link to this one language and no other languages
    • Submitted improved Apache config patch to make wikidata.org always redirect to www.wikidata.org, which is awaiting code review and deployment.
    • Improved the script that is responsible for taking Wikidata changes to the Wikipedias
    • Added a few ways to better debug the script responsible for taking Wikidata changes to the Wikipedias. This should help with investigating why some changes take way to long to show up on the Wikipedias.
    • Started work on automatically adding edited items to the user’s watchlist (according to preferences)
    • Finished script for rebuilding search keys, so we can finally get case insensitive matches in a lot of places
    • Support for multi-line references in diff view
    • Selenium tests for inclusion syntax
    • Improved parser function (that will be used to access Wikidata data on the Wikipedias) to accept property ID or label

    • When you edit a statement there is a little wheel in front of the text field. This lets you choose between “custom value”, “unknown value” and “no value”. “No value” means that we know that the given property has no value, e.g. Elizabeth I of England had no spouse. “Unknown value” means that the property has a value, but it is unknown which one -- e.g. Pope Linus most certainly had a year of birth, but it is unknown to us.

The information below is provided to ensure that your new role as an Online Ambassador is a successful one. There are tasks listed, as well as reading material. Please make sure to complete the actions presented below, as quickly as possible.

The Wikipedia Education Program is a relatively new program that is continuing to experience change and transition. Our goal is to be better than we were yesterday. For this reason, please remember to check the education noticeboard often. If you have any questions, please contact myself or one of your fellow Ambassadors.

Please complete the following, as soon as possible
  1. Create your Online Ambassador profile.
    If that page is not accessible to you, it means you don't have the online volunteer user right yet. Request it here.
    Leave "Publicly list me as Online Ambassador" checked to have your profile appear in the list of active Online Ambassadors.
  2. Read and review the Wikipedia Ambassadors Principles;
  3. If you haven't done so, browse the training for Ambassadors.
    Much of the training material is primarily intended for new Campus Ambassadors who are not experienced Wikipedians. But this introductory material is also used in the training for students and instructors, so you may want to go through it to familiarize yourself with what those users will have seen.
    If you see ways to improve the training, please edit it!
  4. Browse the list of current courses, and add yourself as an Online Ambassador on the course page for any you would like to help with.
    Be sure to introduce yourself to each instructor to let her/him know you've volunteered.
  5. Sign up for the Wikipedia Ambassador Program announcements email list.
    This is a very low traffic list for major announcements related to the Wikipedia Education Program program.

Support Structure

Online Ambassadors serve as a vital link in the Wikipedia Education Program, assisting new student editors transition into the Wikipedia editing community. They serve in a leadership role alongside the course instructor; local Campus Ambassador(s), who work with the class in person; and the Regional Ambassador, who checks in periodically with the course to make sure everything is going well. Together, the instructor, Campus Ambassador, Regional Ambassador, and Online Ambassador encompass the course "pod".

The pod is the term we use to refer to the group of individuals that work together to help the students in a particular course successfully contribute to Wikipedia. A prototypical pod might look something like this:

  • A professor or course instructor who is fairly new to Wikipedia, leading a class of 20–30 students, who have been assigned to make significant contributions to new or existing articles related to the course subject.
  • Two Campus Ambassadors, one of whom is an experienced Wikipedian and one of whom is new to the encyclopedia. The Campus Ambassadors are provided with training to learn the basic policies and guidelines of Wikipedia and how to help students contribute effectively.
  • Two Online Ambassadors, one of whom is a moderately experienced Wikipedian, while the other is very experienced. Both have knowledge of community policies and guidelines and are available to provide editing guidance, answer questions, and assistance navigating the community. When needed, Online Ambassadors are also available for one-on-one mentorship.
  • One Regional Ambassador, a moderately experienced Wikipedian who coordinates assistance and support for universities and courses based on a large geographical region.

Role and Responsibilities

The list of the responsibilities of the Online Ambassador are presented in the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). In essence, the role of the Online Ambassador includes:

  1. Helping students in your class(es) when they ask for it and answer their questions;
  2. Serve as a liaison between the professor/student and the community;
  3. In general, keep an eye out for the students and professors and help them navigate the community;
  4. Helping students get feedback on their work (whether from you or other editors with an interest in or knowledge of the subject area)
  5. Be a good example for students, modeling good faith communication and editing practices; and
  6. Communicating regularly with the other members of your pod regarding the progress of the student, along with any issues that come up.

Online Ambassadors can also assist students that are outside of their pod. Generally, Online Ambassadors represent the Ambassador Program and provide assistance for students whenever encountered. While feedback on the style and formatting of student articles is essential, assistance may also be needed to review the articles substance and content. When needed, the Online Ambassador may request the assistance of WikiProjects that focus on technical issues presented in student articles.

Communication Channels

There are three main places for news, updates, and discussion about Wikipedia Ambassadors and the Wikipedia Education Program:

  1. Wikipedia:Education noticeboard
  2. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program announcements list. This is a low-traffic email list that is used for significant announcements that are relevant to the whole program. Please sign up as soon as you get a chance.
  3. Internet Relay Chat (IRC). If you use IRC, please consider adding #wikipedia-en-ambassadors to your channel lineup.

Future communication tools are being developed. Newsletters about the program or messages for Online Ambassadors may occasionally be delivered to your talk page. If you have any questions, please let me know.

Wikidata weekly summary #51

Here's your quick overview of what has been happening around Wikidata over the last week.
  • Development
    • The first 11 Wikipedias can now include data from Wikidata in their articles (If you want to see it in action see the infobox at it:Torino)
    • Worked on automatic summaries for statements
    • Worked on making properties accessible from the client using their label so you can use {{#property:executive director}} instead of {{#property:p169}} for example
    • Made qualifiers ready for the next deployment (Please test. See details further down.)
    • Selenium tests for qualifiers
    • Fixed some issues related to QUnit testing
    • Worked on improved handling and code design of multiple snak lists in the UI (qualifiers, references)

    • We’re currently carefully monitoring performance after the deployment of phase 2 on the first 11 Wikipedias. There seem to be a few small issues. As soon as they are resolved we'll deploy on English Wikipedia. All other Wikipedias are planned to follow very soon after that.
    • Bye and a big thank you to Anja, Silke, Jens and John who are leaving the development team at the end of the month and will work on other cool things. You’ll be missed!
    • Ever had any doubt about the possibilities of Wikidata? Talk to Wiri!
    • We worked on reducing the time it takes for Wikidata edits to show up in the Wikipedias and made some progress. Daniel posted an analysis
    • We started running a script on the database in order to make search on Wikidata case-insensitive. This should be finished in a few days and then search should be more useful.
    • In addition to the above we have rolled out a new search box that suggests items. This should also make finding things on Wikidata a lot easier for you.
    • We’re making some progress with Internet Explorer 8 support but there are a lot of issues with it (some outside our control). It’s unclear at the moment how much we can improve it still without spending an unjustified amount of time on it. You can follow the progress at bugzilla:44228
    • Edits are now auto-confirmed for users with more than 50 edits and account age 4 days: bugzilla:46461
    • Do you need old-style interwiki links for a sister project for example? This is for you
    • The Wikimedia Foundation applied as a mentoring organisation for Google Summer of Code again. We have proposed some Wikidata projects for students to take up if the Foundation is accepted again. At least 2 other organisations that applied also propose Wikidata ideas. More details on that once we know which organisations are accepted.
    • Denny hacked together a tree of life based on data from Wikidata
    • Wikidata was added to wikipulse
    • A template to retrieve data from Wikidata if no local value is set

Questions about references

Stuart, I have added some various 3rd party references for my scratch page about the germania singing and sport society, I was curious if you could look them over and let me know if I was heading in the right direction? I've helped edit in the past, but never created a page from scratch, so I'm still very new to this. I've been reading the Wiki guide for new users and while I have gotten through much of it, I still have a ways to go before becoming Wiki adept. ANy advice or guidance is appreciated. Thank you

Hello Sobriant74. For the purposes of WP:GNG we're not looking for passing mentions, entries in events databases or content apparently written by those associated with the subject. We're looking for long-form professional journalism with evidence of independent research or adversarial debate. These are still lacking from the article. Hi there, I see that you've removed unreferenced bits of the University of Canterbury article, and in case you haven't got the article on your watchlist, one of your edits got reversed by User:Flags33. The same kind of information got added to the Canterbury Province article by the same user yesterday, and I've left a message on the talk page requesting a reference. Hi There, Would you reconsider your merge and redirect recommendation for this article and replace them with a "Keep"? Alternativley the article could be tagged at this stage. I think that I have answered all or most of the objections in the deletion log. Nomination of Benjamin Wong Tape for deletion

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article Benjamin Wong Tape is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Benjamin Wong Tape until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article.

Sorry for the PROD on the page. I didn't realize there was consensus within Wikipedia:WikiProject_New_Zealand that people with DNZB entries are notable.     • The first year is over. Thank you everyone for being amazing and helping to build Wikidata and making it more than we could possibly have hoped for already. <3

    • Finished valueview refactoring. Created new extension “ValueView”

    • Deployment of phase 2 on English Wikipedia is currently planned for April 8. The remaining Wikipedias are scheduled for April 10. As usual this might change if we run into problems along the way.
    • There is now a page showing the current lag for changes propagating to the Wikipedias so they can show up in watchlists and recent changes for example. This should ideally be in the range of a few minutes. Right now it is higher because of some abnormally high bot activity but decreasing. Should be down to a few minutes soon.
    • There’s now a badge you can add to Wikipedia articles to indicate there is data about it on Wikidata
    • We hit Q10000000
    • A Wikidata item in the wild ;-)

John Moulton

In reference to the deleted article John Moulton (medical practitioner) I'm wondering if you might reconsider your opposition to this article. I have recently read WP:NRU and feel that it conclusively proves Moulton's notability for inclusion in Wikipedia. I hope you will agree and assist me in it being reinstated. As the team doctor he was an administrator of a "High Performance Union" for a long period and also at the time of winning the Rugby World Cup so he is clearly deemed notable by current standards. (a) Nothing 'proves' anything on wikipedia, since everything is done by consensus. (b) The article has been deleted and I can't see it, so I'm not going to comment on it. (c) If you're serious about raising it from the dead, I suggest that you ask for a userfication of deleted article and ask for help. Second Twentieth Battalion

Thank you for your comments re my article on the 2/20 Battalion AIF, I have adjusted the opening paragraph so it is more obvious that the 2/20th raised in WWII is a different battalion from the 20th Battalion of WWI... the 2/20 was named after the 20th, even had the same colour patch, but they were different men fighting in a different war.     • Got some external professional review of our code and architecture and started working on their feedback
    • Worked on reducing the dispatch lag (the time it takes for changes on Wikidata to be sent to the Wikipedias for display in watchlist, recent changes and to purge affected pages)
    • Worked on using Redis for job queue to improve the lag situation even further
    • Created new Wikibase Query extension for phase 3 functionality
    • Autocomments & Autosummaries for SetClaim module
    • Worked on the GeoCoordinate parser

    • right now: GLAM-WIKI 2013

  • Other Noteworthy Stuff
    • Deployment of phase 2 on the remaining Wikipedias was delayed because of a high lag of changes being propagated to the Wikipedias. The lag has been reduced considerably now and is going down even more. The new date for deployment will not be next week because there are other large changes on Wikimedia infrastructure scheduled that we do not want to interfere with. It will hopefully happen very soon after that though.
    • Next code update on wikidata.org is planned for Wednesday. This should include qualifiers and bugfixes.
    • There will probably be a short outage/read-only for wikidata.org on Tuesday (database is being switched to MariaDB)
    • If you're a student and interested in coding on Wikidata consider applying for Google Summer of Code.
    • There is a new user right: property creators

Proposed deletion

I have concerns over your proposed deletion tagging of articles. Proposed deletion, as explained in the WP:PROD page is "a way to suggest an article for uncontroversial deletion". Many of the articles that you have recently tagged are clearly not uncontroversial deletion candidates, and as you have in some cases nominated several articles within the space of a minute, this suggests that you are not looking at them closely enough. In particular, please see the 'Before nomination' section and the instruction "Be sure you have a valid reason for deletion. Consider alternatives to deletion like merging or redirecting". I would also request that you at least undertake a Google search to see if there are sources available which could be used to address a lack of sources in the article, given that this has in many cases been you reason for deletion. Dear Stuartyeates,

Some days ago you put the tag {{Confusing}} on top of the new article Autowave reverberator. You are strongly encouraged to use the "reason=" parameter to explain what is confusing for you, as it is recommended by Wiki-rules. If you have no reason, you should not confuse readers about confusing article.

Please, note also that marking sections or entire articles is undesirable.

However, I would not like to insist that the current version of the article is irreproachable, because the translation of the article was performed by me, and my skills in English is not excellent.

Hence, we, you and I, might in couple edit the English version of the discussed article in order to make the article better, - if you will be able to explain clearly the problems, by which you are confused, and then I try to explain more clearly the correct meaning of the confusing parts.

In other way, the tag {{Confusing}} should be removed.

Open Help Conference

The Open Help Conference will be taking place June 15-19 in Cincinnati Ohio, USA. The conference includes two days of presentations and open discussions, followed by team "sprints" - collaborative efforts to write and improve documentation.

It has been suggested to send a team from Wikipedia/Wikimedia: to share our own knowledge about help, learn from others in the open source community working on similar problems, and to carry out a sprint to improve some aspect of Wikipedia's help.

There may be support available for volunteers to attend from the Participation Support program (and your editor is certainly hoping to be there!) Please join the discussion in Meta's IdeaLab if you're interested, and/or have suggestions about what we could work on.

What else we can do?

The former text of the article Anatolii Alexeevitch Karatsuba (about one Russian mathematician) sutisfies to all Wikipedia requirement. This is an article about one of the best Russian mathematicians ever who invented first fast multiplication algorithm inplemented at present almost in all computers. He had a lot of other top level mathresults in number theory and some other fields. The article is well sourced. However SteveJ (administrotir) deleted the article and put his own text with one line which downplay the A.A. Karatsuba results only because of the reason that it doesn't correspond to his own view. Other administrators protected StevenJ variant (do not let us to revert our text) and wrote that we (who edited the text about A.A. Karatsuba) must come to consensus with Stevenj. However, he do not want any consensus on any conditions excluding his own text in three lines, one of them is very offensive for A.A. Karatsuba (everybody who knows about real facts can confirm it). What to do? Our discussion with him turned out to absurd because he pretends he does not see our sources (published by Springer papers in mathjournals), but as his sources quoted words of "notalble people" (by his opinion) but not publications. In his mathematical discussion he also plays unhonest game. He stated there is certain information in certain source, but when I read it, I didn't find this information there. It's only interpretation by Stevenj. Another unhonest way for mathdiscussion "to mix results", he speaks about DFT but not about FFT in such a way like this is the same. It's possible to continue such useless discussions unlimetly long preventing to revert the good text about A.A. Karatsuba.

We agree (see Talk page Anatolii Alexeevitch Karatsuba) to delete such claims in this article which very annoyed Stevenj (although they are right, and all explanations have been made to Stevenj, he rejected them bacause it doesn't correspond to some other Wikipedia texts which Stevenj created himself!). So we tried to state such a consensus deleting what Stevenj stated as "exaggerated claims". However, it is not enough for him. He simple don't want that any good text about A.A. Karatsuba would be. I will not mention "double standards": I edited some other Wikipedia texts about American mathematicians and never had problems like that with this paper about Russian mathematician.


What to do? How to block unhonest game of StevenJ? It has no any relation to Wikip[edia rules etc. It has relation only to the character of this person. Some time ago another editor of A.A. Karatsuba article had sharp discussion with Stevenj, so, as I believe, he decided to revenge. I repeat, this article correponds to all Wikipedia rules including the sourcing and notability guidelines. What to do in such situation?Mathtruth (talk) 10:57, 5 May 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A favor -Environmental law articles ready for preliminary review

Hi Stuartyeates. I see that you're an online ambassador. I'm the Professor for Aaron Frank's environmental law class, and while you're not signed up for my course, I was wondering if you'd be willing to take a look at any or all of the articles my students are working on. One of the aspects of this sort of course is that students understand that they are putting their work out before the wikipedia community for review. In the past, there hasn't been that much activity on their pages as they were working on them. I was hoping that if you were willing, you could take a look. If not, no problem.

The students now have draft articles in mainspace and are starting to review each other's articles, and they could also use a preliminary review by an experienced Wikipedian in this area. If you get a chance, ideally sometime before Thursday or so, please take a look at the following list of articles and leave feedback on the talk page:

Stuartyeates, I don't understand the attitude. I know how to write leads, and how to write WP:GAs and what it takes to write WP:FAs. And I'm the one who, yesterday (going by real time, not just Wikipedia time), mentioned at the Wikipedia:Education noticeboard that the Sexual cannibalism article needs cleanup. I was simply noting here at your talk page that you tagged that article as needing a lead. The tag you used is for articles that don't have leads, not for articles that have bad leads. We don't have a "bad lead" tag (yet anyway). Someone is bound to remove the tag you added, and I thought you'd added it by accident. Since you didn't, don't mind me. Hi Stuart,
