An Air ferry is a service, at which cars are transported by planes, which travels regulary. The air ferry service was inaugaurated by retired RAF officer Air Commodore Griffith J. (‘Taffy’) Powell, who founded in 1948 an airline company called Silver City. They used Bristol 170 airplanes and operated until 1954 from Lympne airfield, later from Lydd airport. As airplanes later also Aviation Traders Carvair were used. In 1962 Channel Air Bridge and Silver City merged, but stopped in 1968 operation. the last air ferry took off from Lydd on 3 October 1970. Other companies continued air ferry services until approximately 1980.
