Associated Musicians

[edit]

What's going on with the disappearing Jody Linscott entry in the associated musicians section? Linscott played two to three full tours with The Who (depending on how you count it), plus some one-off gigs. Also, shouldn't the Kick Horn musicians be listed here? They've played a couple of full tours plus one-off gigs with The Who, as well. Steve Bolton? Billy Nicholls?

Damon Minchella and Steve White only played one gig with The Who and they're listed here. Rather than sample performers that have played only once, it seems we should list musicians who have played with The Who for a least most of a tour. Comments?Pkeets (talk) 00:56, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

These musicians are the only musicians who performed with The Who as one of the main musicians in the band ie: Drums (Sandom, Townson, Halpin, Phillips, White), Keyboards (Gorman, Carin, Kehew) and Bass (Minchella). Other musicians such as Jody Linscott (percussionist) and essentially all of the "extras" on the 1989 tour (horns, backup singers) are auxillary musicians. If Steve Bolton had an article about him his inculsion would be warranted, as he player lead guitar, one of the defining instruments in the band.DaltreyEntwistleMoonTownshend (talk) 20:11, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If that's the criterion, then are you going to include David Gilmour and Geoff Whitehorn for lead guitar and Jon Button for bass with The Who? I'm sure there are others, as well. Pkeets (talk) 14:35, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Gilmour and Whitehorn only performed with The Who when the performances were designated the Who and special guests (I think - correct me if I'm wrong). Did Button ever play bass for The Who? I know for a fact (I went to a concert) that he played for Roger Daltrey's bandDaltreyEntwistleMoonTownshend (talk) 20:05, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Whitehorn played lead guitar for the whole 1996 Quadrophenia tour, didn't he? And Simon Townshend played on the 1997 tour? Here's Jon Button: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArEwvWtMCa8 Pkeets (talk) 23:57, 15 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
BTW, where's Bob Pridden? Pkeets (talk) 01:39, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Whitehorn- http://reocities.com/sunsetstrip/Diner/2674/gwhit_b.htm - Says he was part of the band when it was credited as "Townshend, Daltrey, Entwistle present Quadrophenia," when the tour started and the group was billed as "The Who", Whitehorn didn't participate. I'm going to look into the Button thing, but that video almost cements him a spot in the template. Wonder if there are any other one off performances with random/obscure musicians? Well, as they come to our attention we'll put them up.DaltreyEntwistleMoonTownshend (talk) 22:09, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I'm sure they played an acoustic gig a few years back with another upright bass player, but I don't remember who it was. I was right on top of this one, and emailed Button to make sure it was him. Pkeets (talk) 23:10, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Awesome. If he confirms it was him, put him up after J.J. Blair.67.80.94.155 (talk) 00:46, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Button already confirmed a couple of months ago. I'll put him back in the template and put The Who back in the "associated musicians" of his page. Pkeets (talk) 21:34, 18 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Did some research and found out (some of) the names of the session drummers between Sandom and Moon. All I could find were Mitch Mitchell and Dave Golding. There could have been more. Also, I found out that there was a drummer named Julian Covey who filled in for Moon for only one gig before Chris Townson helped out in 1967. I created articles for Golding and Covey (whose real name is Phil Kinorra). About Bob Pridden - is there a single word that could be used to describe managers, producers and engineers? That way I could fuse the two-sub groups (managers and producers) into one and add Bob.DaltreyEntwistleMoonTownshend (talk) 03:43, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

'Personel', maybe? I remember seeing that word used in this way for another band's template. Can't recall which band, though. Democraticmacguitarist (talk) 10:45, 17 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

How is Steve Gibbons associated with the band? I'm removing him until an association is brought to light. The fact that his band was managed by the same group as The Who and toured with them once does not qaulify in my opinion.DaltreyEntwistleMoonTownshend (talk) 19:28, 19 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Members

[edit]

There have been some people who have been changing the layout of the members section, where they put the classic lineup first, then clump the rest of the members below. However, I want to make this clear: The band is still together, and John and Keith are not there, and therefore need to be below those who are currently playing in the band. When The Who disbands, then we could change it; but for now, do not change the way it is. Democraticmacguitarist (talk) 19:34, 28 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The head section has been corrected to the proper hierarchy of listing...(in the format that it had been in for a long time until tampering earlier this year) This band consists of 2 "members". Sidesmen are simply contracted workers who are significant to the band's live appearance... but are not members and have no "ownership" of anything to do with the band, as a "business." Hope that helps. Wiki libs (talk) 13:51, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If you read previous versions of this talk page, you'll find the order you screwed with was agreed on earlier. Do not change it! Democraticmacguitarist (talk) 14:34, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
The talk page was reviewed and the only person who ever spoke of promoting the contracted sidesmen to official members was.... you. The debate is now re-opened for others to respond. Wait for other commentary from intereted editors. In the meantime read WP:AGF. Wiki libs (talk) 14:59, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I told you to check previous versions. Go and you'll find it very obvious. Stop changing the order. Democraticmacguitarist (talk) 15:15, 29 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mind pointing it out to me? I just went through the archives of this talk page, and the only discussion I found was between a small handful of people (myself included), and was unanimously in favour of the previous layout.
All I see is that it was first changed around a year ago by an anon without any discussion (or even an edit summary), followed three months later by User:DaltreyEntwistleMoonTownshend saying "it has been discussed many times". Where, exactly? Did I miss something out of that archive page? - Monkeynutbar (talk) 10:26, 5 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
The Official Who website clearly defines Pete, Roger, John and Keith as official members and the others as "the tour band". Unless there is a source that is more official than the official Who website, I don't see why this is even an issue. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.168.239.69 (talk) 20:22, 7 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]
\Alright, so new Quadrophenia tour announced and all that (for which I am super excited). Anyway....... http://thewho.com/story/tickets-on-sale-beginning-friday-july-20-general-public-on-sale-july-27/ <<----This article says that Chris Stainton (who played many of the piano parts on the original studio album) is going to be joining the touring roster (replaced Rabbit, IDK what happened to him), along with Loren Gold and Frank Simes, members of Roger's touring band. So, I dropped Rabbit to the associated musicians spot, seeing as he no longer is touring with the band, and was never an official member. (No explanation was given for him not appearing on this upcoming tour.) I added the "touring members" tag that I see other band templates use in order to reduce confusion. I debated putting a "former members" tag in front of Moon, Ent, and Jones, but decided against it. DaltreyEntwistleMoonTownshend (talk) 23:21, 25 July 2012 (UTC)[reply]
[edit]

A recent edit by Pkeets added Kim McLagan to the "Related articles" section. This article technically belongs under "Related people", but it does not fit in either of the subcategories. We could create a third subcategory for family and spouses, but I'm wanting some opinions as to how far of a reach we want in this template. Democraticmacguitarist (talk) 00:46, 1 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is a template primarily about the *music* of the *group* The Who. I wouldn't include her. E-Kartoffel (talk) 10:35, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know about that. For The Beatles template, the agreement was that family members would only be on each individual's respective templates. However, Keith Moon doesn't have a template, and probably never will, so his family members should probably be included in this template. Of course, if we put one member's family in, we'd have to put in the others. Democraticmacguitarist (talk) 11:50, 6 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
