Pere Albajar i Viñas
Pedro Albajar Viñas (Campinas, Sao Paulo, Brazil, 1965) is a Spanish and Brazilian physician and researcher, with familiar roots in Caldes de Montbui (Catalonia). He is specialized in tropical deseases, and technician of the Department of Neglected Tropical Diseases of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva[1] and coordinator of WHO Chagas disease programme.[2]
Biography
Pere Albajar has dual nationality, Brazilian and Spanish. He was born in Brazil when his parents, from Caldes de Montbui (Catalonia, Spain), moved to Brazil for opening a catalan company factory. He lived his first years of his childhood in Brazil, although most of his education and youth were in Catalonia.[5] He was a child singer of Escolania de Montserrat between 1975 and 1979 (as were also his other three brothers were), and a sister of him is the abbess of the community of Sant Benet de Montserrat, Maria del Mar Albajar Viñas.[6]
He is a member of NGO Caldes Solidària`` and vice-president of the NGO NeAc (Nucli d'estudis per a l'Amazònia de Catalunya, Catalan Center of Studies for Amazonia ) that collaborates in several development projects in Brazil. In 2010 he received the International Cooperation for Human Development prize of the Consell Comarcal del Vallès Oriental.[7]
Studies
He studied medicine at the University of Barcelona, where he graduated in 1990. He immediately began specific training to work with communities in the tropical area. He conducted training courses on development cooperation organized by the [CIDOB] Foundation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1990), and on indigenous culture ("Anthropology, Ethnology, History, Legislation, and the religion of cultures indigenous people of America ") organized by Conselho Indigenista Misionero de Rondônia, in Porto Velho, Rondônia, Brazil (1994). In 1993 he obtained the Diploma in Tropical Medicine from the University of Barcelona and in 1996 the "Diploma of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene" at The Royal College of Physicians and the "Master Science course Infection & Health in the Tropics" the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine of the University of London. Doctorate in Tropical Medicine in 2003 at the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation. He is currently a guest lecturer at the University of Barcelona and the Autonomous University of Barcelona, visiting researcher from the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation, Technical Adviser of Doctors Without Borders and Consultant of the Pan American Health Organization.[8]
