Introduction
Agua Amarga is a Spanish locality and district belonging to the municipality of Níjar, in the province of Almería, in the autonomous community of Andalusia. The village still supports part of its fishing tradition. Its name comes from the Arabic Al-hawan, which means location of water. The name of the village has also been explained by some as "bitter water" as the taste of seawater has been reported to have a bitter taste, which is probably due to the presence of small iron particles from the mine. The centre of the village is formed of a group of white houses, and a few hotel facilities next to the sea. The entire town is surrounded by the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park.
