Summary of Palmeiras

Overview

Founded by Italian immigrants on August 26, 1914 under the name Palestra Italia, the "Alviverde" club was forced to change its name in 1942, due to altercations with the Brazilian government, and was renamed.

Palmeiras is one of it not, the most successful club in Brazil, being the biggest national champion, with 18 titles. Among the greatest achievements in its history are the international club tournament or "mundial" of 1951, the 1999, 2020 and 2021 Copa Libertadores da América, 12 Campeonato Brasileiros and 4 Copa do Brasil.

Start of Palmeiras

Palestra Italia (in Italian the word Italy is not accented; the word Palestra is Greek) was founded on August 26, 1914 by immigrants from the Italian community in the city of São Paulo. Its foundation was due to the presence of two Italian teams in Brazil, in this case Pro Vercelli and Torino, which served as inspiration for the creation of a team that would represent the Italian community in the São Paulo championship. The main names behind the founding of Palestra were: Luigi Cervo and Luigi Marzo, employees of the Industrias Matarazzo, plus Vincenzo Ragognetti, journalist, and Ezequiel Simone, who was the oldest of them and a member of several Italian cultural entities at the time. The founding minutes, by the way, are written in Italian.
