Summary
| Description |
English: In the Paraguayan War, the outwork or redoubt called "Estabelecimento Novo" by the Brazilians ("Cierva" by the Paraguayans). This map shows that the outwork was not on the River Paraguay, as the Allies had thought, but on the shore of an inland lagoon. It had no strategic value; it was a bluff. Its hard-fought capture on 19 February 1868 with serious loss of life turned out to be pointless. (Base map by E.C. Jourdan of the Brazilian engineering corps, about 1870.) |
