Summary

Description

Photograph of Granville Place (now Gwynne Place), London WC1, in July 1924. The steps in Granville Place were the model for Riceyman Steps in the book of that name by Arnold Bennett. The photograph was probably taken from an upper room of The Bagnigge Wells Tavern public house, which stood almost opposite Granville Place at 39 Kings Cross Road. It was taken by George Free, my great-grandfather, who was at the time landlord of The Bagnigge Wells. For many years the photograph was taped into the frontispiece of a first edition of Arnold Bennett's book.
