- 1902 – General Order Number 1 promulgated the change from State to Federal organisation for the Military of Australia.
- 1942 – World War II: The USS Sturgeon sank the Japanese ship Montevideo Maru. The ship was carrying 1,050 POWs, mainly from the 2/22nd Battalion and 1st Independent Company. There were no survivors amongst the prisoners.
- 1945 – World War II: The 7th Division landed at Balikpapan, Borneo as part of Operation OBOE.
- 1917 – World War I: Major General William Holmes killed in action whilst commanding the 4th Division.
- 1952 – Korean War: A Company, 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment takes part in its first major action in Korea. It raided Chinese positions on Hill 227.
- 1912 – Two BE 2a and two Deperdussin aircraft ordered for the Australian Flying Corps; these are the first military aircraft ordered for Australia.
- 1943 – World War II: The 39th Infantry Battalion, which participated in the Kokoda Track campaign, was disbanded.
- 1918 – World War I: Thomas Axford was awarded the Victoria Cross for actions near Hamel Woods, France, during the Battle of Hamel.
- 1918 – World War I: Henry Dalziel was awarded the Victoria Cross for actions near Hamel Woods, France.
- 1941 – World War II: Hughie Edwards was awarded the Victoria Cross for actions over Bremen, Germany.
- 1916 – World War I: Battle of Romani took place in the Sinai against Ottoman troops.
- 1995 – The Federal Cabinet met in the War Cabinet Room at Victoria Barracks, Melbourne. The first time the Cabinet had met in this room since World War II.
- 1918 – World War I: Corporal Walter Brown, of the 20th Battalion, wins a Victoria Cross for his actions around Villers-Bretonneux
- 1941 – World War II: during the Battle of Damour, Australian troops assault Vichy French positions
- 1942 – the 9th Division is committed to the First Battle of El Alamein
- 1942 – World War II: Wellington bombers from No. 460 Squadron RAAF attack shipyards around Wilhelmshaven
- 1941 – the Battle of Damour concludes
- 1911 – the Royal Australian Navy is formed
- 1941 – Private James Gordon, of the 2/31st Battalion, wins a Victoria Cross during the Battle of Jezzine
- 1941 – RAAF fighter ace Bobby Gibbes, flying a P-40 Tomahawk, claims his first aerial victory, a Vichy French Dewoitine D.520 fighter, during the Syria–Lebanon Campaign
- 1965 – 3 RAR takes part in its final action of the Malayan Emergency in Kalimantan
- 1918 – World War I: on the Western Front, the 10th Brigade captures Merris prior to the Allied Hundred Days Offensive
- 1953 – Korean War: HMAS Tobruk deploys to the east coast of Korea, patrolling the northern waters
- 1941 – World War II: the Syria–Lebanon campaign ends
- 1943 – World War II: the Battle of Mubo ends
- 1940 – World War II: the Volunteer Defence Corps is established for home defence
- 1943 – World War II: the Battle of Mount Tambu begins as Australian forces advance on Salamaua
- 1918 – Lieutenant Albert Borella, of the 26th Battalion, wins a Victoria Cross at Villers-Bretonneux
- 1918 – birth of Clare Stevenson, inaugural Director of the Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force
- 1916 – World War I: Troops from the 5th Division launch a costly attack at Fromelles, the first action of the AIF on the Western Front
- 1916 – World War I: the 1st and 2nd Light Horse Brigades begin harassing German, Austrian and Ottoman forces advancing on Romani
- 1942 – World War II: the Kokoda Track campaign begins
- 1943 – World War II: the Battle of Roosevelt Ridge commences
- 1942 – Private Stan Gurney, of the 2/48th Battalion, wins a Victoria Cross during the First Battle of El Alamein
- 1916 – World War I: the Battle of Pozieres commences
- 1900 – Second Boer War: Neville Howse is awarded the Victoria Cross for actions near Vredefort, Orange Free State.
- 1916 – World War I: Thomas Cooke is awarded the Victoria Cross for actions at Pozieres, France.
- 1945 – World War II: Frank John Partridge is awarded the Victoria Cross for actions during the Battle of Ratsua on the Bonis Peninsula, Bougainville.
- 1916 – World War I: 1st Division engaged in heavy fighting with German troops near Pozières.
- 1950 – Korean War: 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment was placed on alert for service in Korea.
- 1915 – World War I: the 2nd Division is formed in Egypt.
- 1940 – World War II: the Royal Australian Air Force Nursing Service is formed.
- 1942 – World War II: the Australian Women's Land Army was formed.
- 1942 – World War II: Australian troops from Maroubra Force re-establish defensive positions following a Japanese assault on Kokoda.
- 1916 – World War I: Claude Castleton was awarded the Victoria Cross for actions at Pozieres, France.
- 1942 – World War II: The Japanese continue their assault on Kokoda.
- 1918 – World War I: 1st Division captured Merris, France.
- 1942 – World War II: Japanese troops capture Kokoda after a short engagement with Maroubra Force
- 1916 – World War I: HMAS Pioneer bombards Dar Es Salaam, Tanzania.
- 1942 – World War II: Port Hedland, Darwin and Horn Island are bombed by Japanese aircraft
- 1942 – World War II: Mosman, Queensland is bombed by Japanese aircraft.
- 1962 – Vietnam War: The first contingent of the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam arrive in South Vietnam.
