Marvin Barinemnwin Dekil is a Nigerian Environmental scientist, academician, lawyer and politician. He is an oil remediation expert and has been consultant at the United Nations Environment Program – UNEP,[1] UK Environment Agency, Oil industry and Government in Nigeria. He is currently the coordinator of Nigeria's Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) for the Clean up of Ogoni land and the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.[2][3] He is an alumnus of University of Oxford Said Business School.

Background

Marvin Dekil is an environmentalist with expertise in impacted land remediation, assessment and restoration . He is from Ogoni, Rivers state, Nigeria. Dekil holds a Ph.D in Environmental science from the University of Bradford [4] UK and a masters in Environmental Pollution Control from University of Leeds. He is a graduate of the University of Port Harcourt, Rivers state where he studied Microbiology. Dekil is also a Lawyer. He holds a BL from the Nigerian Law School and an LLM in Environmental Law from the University of London.

Career

Earlier in his career, Dekil worked as a Technical Assistant to Rivers State Commissioner for Environment where he was responsible for Development and Implementation of Rivers State Government (Ministry of Environment) joint projects with International Development Partners; United Nations Development Program (UNDP), World Bank, Ecological Fund and other Technical Consultants. In 2012, he was a member of the Nigeria Delegation to United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio +20) Rio de Janeiro Brazil.[5]

In 2017, Dekil was appointed by the Nigeria's former Minister of Environment and current Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations, Amina Mohammed as project coordinator for the hydrocarbon pollution remediation project HYPREP.[6]
