Philip Wai Yan Chiu
[edit]Philip CHIU Wai-yan (Chinese: 趙偉仁) is a Hong Kong surgeon and academic. He is currently the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), Shun Hing Education and Charity Fund Professor of Robotic Surgery and Director of Multi-Scale and Medical Robotics Center. He is also the Honorary Director of Endoscopy at Prince of Wales Hospital and the New Territories East Cluster of the Hospital Authority. He is a past president of Endoscopic and Laparoscopic Surgeons of Asia (2021-2023). [3]
Early Life and Education
[edit]Chiu was born in Hong Kong into a family with strong ties to medicine. His father was a doctor, and his mother, Professor Ng Yuet Lau, was a nurse who later became an artist[4]. This mix of influences sparked Chiu's love for painting and his desire to help others through medicine. [5]
In 1988, Chiu enrolled in the Faculty of Medicine of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK)[6]. He was at Chung Chi College during his undergraduate years and graduated with an MBChB degree in 1994 with 2 scholarships. Chiu obtained his Doctor of Medicine (MD) from CUHK in 2009 [7].
Career
[edit]Chiu spent his first 10 years of his medical career at United Christian Hospital and Prince of Wales Hospital respectively[8].
In 2005, Chiu joined CUHK Faculty of Medicine as an Associate Professor[6], and became a professor at the Department of Surgery in 2010. He was the Chief of Upper Gastrointestinal and Metabolic Surgery at the same department in 2021 until stepping down when he assumed the role of Dean of Faculty of Medicine of CUHK on 1 February 2024. Prior to that, Chiu was also successively the Director of CUHK Jockey Club Minimally Invasive Surgical Skills Centre (2011-2021), Assistant Dean (External Affairs) (2013-2020) and Associate Dean (External Affairs) of CUHK Faculty of Medicine (2020-2024).
Concurrently, Chiu is Director of Chow Yuk Ho Technology Centre for Innovative Medicine, Director of Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center at CUHK; Honorary Director of Endoscopy at Prince of Wales Hospital and the New Territories East Cluster of the Hospital Authority[7].
As the Dean of Faculty of Medicine of CUHK, Chiu is also a member of the Hospital Governing Committee of the Prince of Wales Hospital, a member of the Hospital Authority Board and one of the Directors at CUHK Medical Centre, a private, non-profit hospital and teaching partner of CUHK[9][10].
Research
[edit]Chiu’s research focuses on oesophageal cancer management, minimally invasive and robotic esophagectomy, novel endoscopic technologies for diagnosis of early gastrointestinal (GI) cancers, endoscopic surgery as well as robotics for endoluminal surgery.
Driven by a desire to improve patient care, Chiu has consistently pushed the boundaries of medical innovation. In 2004, he performed Hong Kong's first endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) for early GI cancers, preserving the patient’s organ that would have required conventional surgery. In 2010, he conducted the first Per-oral Endoscopic Myotomy (POEM) in Hong Kong. In 2011, he collaborated with engineers in Singapore to pioneer the world’s first robotic gastric ESD, followed by the first robotic colorectal ESD in 2020[10].
Inspired by Professor Joseph Sung’s vision of interdisciplinary collaboration between engineers and doctors in developing innovative surgical instruments, Professor Chiu established the Chow Yuk Ho Technology Centre for Innovative Medicine in 2015 to strengthen research partnerships between clinicians and engineers at CUHK. This led to the creation of the Multi-Scale Medical Robotics Center (MRC) in 2019, one of CUHK's six InnoHK Centres dedicated to research in artificial intelligence and robotics. Under the leadership of Chiu and co-director Professor Samuel Au, the MRC collaborates with leading universities (Imperial College London, ETH Zurich, and Johns Hopkins University) on a range of robotic platforms and interventions from micro to nano scales.[11]
