Early life
[edit]Kyburz served in the Swiss Armed Forces and during his military service, gained an affinity for blogging, starting his first blog website in February, 2010, under the name Swiss-Kyburz[1] which is no longer actively in use. In August, 2014, five months after starting a new position as a journalist for the technology column at Blick am Abend, Kyburz moved to Zürich, Switzerland, where he currently resides.[2]
Career
[edit]Kyburz became a technology journalist for Blick am Abend in 2014, as the primary writer for their technology column[3]. Following his position as a journalist for Blick am Abend, Kyburz founded the tech news magazine Techgarage towards the end of 2018[4]. Kyburz self-described the primary focus of the magazine as being a way to review the latest technological products, and inform readership of new trends around the world[5]. He officially launched the publication on January 1st, 2019[6].
Kyburz transitioned to a dual role of founder and editor-in-chief of Techgarage in 2020[7]. He also became the founder of Kyburz Media Agency in the same year[8], providing content creation for websites and blogs, and offering services managing WordPress hosting and development.[9]
Swiss Blogger Manifesto
[edit]In August of 2014, Kyburz was mentioned by Adrienne Fichter, journalist for Neue Zürcher Zeitung, describing a moment in which Fichter questioned Kyburz and Clemens Schuster on the silencing of Swiss bloggers[10]. The debate took place during the Barcamp conference in Switzerland[11], and Fichter stated that the end result was the creation of a manifesto. On August 29th, 2014, Fichter subsequently published another article describing Kyburz and Schuster's manifesto as a call for bloggers and journalists to have equal rights.[12] The manifesto was described as an open Google document, however, Fichter wrote that the idea of the manifesto generated attention on social media and described Kyburz and Schuster and not being interested in further debate.
On September 27th, 2014, Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen conducted a radio interview hosted by Vinzenz Wyss, professor of journalism at the Zurich University of Applied Sciences. Wyss invited Kevin Kyburz and Adrienne Fichter to speak on behalf of the created Swiss Blogger Manifesto and the relation between the manifesto and the ethics of influencer marketing. During the interview, Wyss questioned Kyburz and Fichter on gift-based social influence and asked if they believed that it was time for a code of conduct to be created for bloggers. Other questions asked of Kyburz and Fichter were their thoughts on how the manifesto could be used and whether it would work.[13]
Media mentions and appearances
[edit]On August 2nd of 2016, Schweizer Radio und Fernsehen interviewed Kyburz on the subject of smartphone addiction, with the thesis of SRF's argument stating that too much technological access could result in more stress.[14]
In 2018, Kyburz appeared in the television series "The Undertaker", also known as "Der Bestatter". He played the role of a Police Officer, in an episode titled, "Les jeux sont faits".[15][16]
In April of 2021, Blick, a Swiss German-language daily newspaper asked Kyburz to provide commentary on the Instagram hack that affected Swiss celebrities Jessica Gismondi, a social media influencer, and comedian Patti Basler. Manuel Kellerhals, journalist for Blick wrote that hackers had been recently noted as attacking multiple high-profile stars and events, using their accounts to launch further attacks on friends and fans. Kellerhals stated that an ex-SRF presenter, ex-Mister Switzerland and a larger music festival were also the target of the alleged hacks. Kyburz provided commentary, stating that he believed that the hacks were related and would lead to more nefarious hacking. He described the hacker's methodology as using the accounts to gain further access to contacts through hacked accounts. In addition, Kyburz provided defensive advice, recommending that Instagram users change their passwords and validate that users double check the legitimacy of messages coming from other users, regardless of their social media verification status.[17][18][19]
