Lead Section Size

The lead section of a Wikipedia article is the section before the first heading. The table of contents, if displayed, generally appears between the lead section and the first subheading.

Rule of thumb: If a topic deserves a heading or subheading, then it deserves short mention in the lead.

The lead section should contain up to four paragraphs, depending on the length of the article, and should provide a preview of the main points the article will make, summarizing the primary reasons the subject matter is interesting or notable. The lead should be capable of standing alone as a concise overview of the article, should be written in a clear and accessible style, should be carefully sourced like the rest of the text, and should encourage the reader to want to read more. The following table has some general guidelines for the length of the lead section:

< 15,000 characters medium size > 30,000 characters
one or two paragraphs   two or three paragraphs   three or four paragraphs

AfroCine: The Months of African Cinema Continues….

[edit]

Greetings!

Thank you very much for signing up to participate in the Months of African Cinema global contest/edit-a-thon, and thank you for your contributions so far.

It is already the middle of the contest and a lot have been achieved already! We have been able to get over 200 articles created in over seven (7) languages! The figures soars to up to a thousand, if Wikidata entries are included. Furthermore, there have been about 5 in-person gatherings of Wikipedians in different countries across the world to create articles about African(a) cinema!

We are very excited about what has been achieved so far, but your contributions are still needed to further exceed all expectations! Let’s create more articles before the end of this contest, which is this November!!!

  • Article suggestions can be found here. You can also add to this list.
  • Some notable reliable sources for African cinema can be found here. Again, this list needs expansion.
  • Interested in Wikidata translation? check out the Occupation Drive, which is being led by Wiki Loves Women, in support of the contest and the project!
  • Please remember to list articles you have created or improved in the Article Achievements section of the contest page, so that they can be easily tracked.

Thank you once again for being part of this global event!

Kind regards.--Jamie Tubers (talk) 22:50, 10 November 2018 (UTC)[reply]

All our winners have been recognized and you can check the complete list here.

For a pilot event, all our expectations were surpassed and we have you to thank for that. Thank you so much for being part of this global event! Thank you for helping to fix African content gaps on Wikipedia! We hope to see more of your participation in future AfroCine events and activities. AfroCine: Join the Months of African Cinema this October!

[edit]

Greetings!

After a successful first iteration of the “Months of African Cinema” last year, we are happy to announce that it will be happening again this year, starting from October 1! In the 2018 edition of the contest, about 600 Wikipedia articles were created in at least 8 languages. There were also contributions to Wikidata and Wikimedia commons, which brought the total number of wikimedia pages created during the contest to over 1,000.

The AfroCine Project welcomes you to October, the first out of the two months which have been dedicated to creating and improving content that centre around the cinema of Africa, the Caribbean, and the diaspora. Join us in this global edit-a-thon, by helping to create or expand articles which are connected to this scope. Also remember to list your name under the participants section.

On English Wikipedia, we would be recognizing participants in the following manner:

  • Overall winner (1st, 2nd, 3rd places)
  • Diversity winner
  • Gender-gap fillers

For further information about the contest, the recognition categories and how to participate, please visit the contest page here. For further inquiries, please leave comments on the contest talkpage or on the main project talkpage. See you around :).--Jamie Tubers (talk) 00:50, 30 September 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Cinema of the Comeros requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a very short article providing little or no context to the reader. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator, or if you have already done so, you can place a request here. ArbCom 2019 election voter message

[edit]
Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:24, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop indiscriminately adding images!

[edit]

I suspect you are participating in that contest in Meta... whatever. You are currently adding images a) apparently randomly chosen by keyword, b) without regard to quality and c) without caption, at d) unsuitable positions in the article. This is not helpful - it makes more work for people having to assess and clean it up than it aids the encyclopedia! I'm rolling back all these changes. If you want to add images, please choose them carefully, add a caption, and place them at the correct location in the article. Many of your pictures are either duplicates, of really bad quality, or almost unrelated to the topic. Stop it. --Elmidae (talk · contribs) 16:38, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Captions under pictures

[edit]

Hi, thanks for adding missing pictures to articles. I have noticed though that alot of times you just copy the exact description from the page where the image was uploaded (eg here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Plamen_Nikolov_(footballer,_born_1961)&oldid=966502648). Most of the times it doesnt really fit the image or is unnecessarily long. It would be better to not have a caption at all or a shorter one. If you dont know what to write there, just leave it blank. Thanks! 178.24.243.212 (talk) 12:45, 9 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bulk uploading of improperly formatted and captioned images

[edit]

Hi. Your edits today are uniformly incorrect in at least two respects: (1) the image itself is being linked using the wrong formatting. for example, your edit on Tragocephala gorilla inserted the following line in the taxobox: "| image = bracket bracket File:Tragocephala nobilis gorilla - Flickr - Bennyboymothman.jpg|thumb| bracket bracket" which creates a box within a box. The correct formatting would have been "| image = Tragocephala nobilis gorilla - Flickr - Bennyboymothman.jpg" with no brackets, and no "File:" prefix. (2) your captions are incorrect, incomplete, and the scientific names are not in italics. In several cases, as in this one, the file name is also not the actual name of the species. This particular image is NOT Tracgocephala gorilla, but Tragocephala castnia cacaoensis, as noted in the accompanying text. Please do not bulk upload files - they need to be checked to ensure that they are what their file names claim they are. Dyanega (talk) 23:49, 20 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

OK. Thanks. I'll take note of that Godstime Elijah (talk) 09:50, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Also please do not create a caption with the same name as the page, as for example with your addition here. See WP:CAPLENGTH for caption guidelines. Also, for your edit summary "added image" is clear enough but I'm not sure what the hashtags are about e.g. #WPWPNG. Thanks Declangi (talk) 23:07, 21 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You are still uploading many images with a caption that is the same as the article name. Check my linked example above and in these cases leave the image_caption field empty. Declangi (talk) 10:42, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I will take note of that Godstime Elijah (talk) 13:04, 30 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

DYK for Tolulope Arotile

[edit]

On 11 August 2020, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Tolulope Arotile, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Tolulope Oluwatoyin Sarah Arotile, the first female combat helicopter pilot in the Nigerian Army, died in a freak car accident? You are welcome to check how many page hits the article got while on the front page (here's how, Tolulope Arotile), and it may be added to the statistics page if the total is over 5,000. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Uzor Arukwe moved to draftspace

On Your Draft Article Draft: Uzor Arukwe

[edit]

I was very much happy to cleanup your draft from its original state to this current state and it reminded me the joy I had in creating articles before I discovered the damage the Nigerian UPE ring was causing & became an anti-UPE editor, I haven’t checked to see if the draft article is notable enough or not but I’d begin to review it now & if so, would accept & publish it but if not would have to regretfully decline, all should take me about 45 minutes to start & finish, Now, speaking of undisclosed paid editing, I’d ask you a simple close ended question & id appreciate a precise response, have you received any financial reward to create this draft article or have you been promised financial rewards for creating this article ? Beware of such articles

[edit]

I have draftified your article & it can be observed here Draft:Mr macaroni. Please beware of creating articles on individuals who at the moment are getting all the media buzz or who are currently in the spotlight. Read WP:TOOSOON, WP:BLP1EVENT, & WP:CRYSTALBALL. His comedy career is negligible & his current interest in activism, roughly (2 weeks) old now is also negligible, you may say “but he trends on Twitter every other day”. & i’d let you know now before you ask that; trending on Twitter invariably indicates popularity but unfortunately “popularity” & “notability” are not synonymous. I anticipated this good faith error was going to be made, hence wasn’t surprised to come across your newly, now draftified article & won’t be surprised to come across other articles similar to this. Celestina007 (talk) 21:06, 16 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

A quick follow up, you may continue to work on the article whilst it’s still in draftspace by including reliable sources to substantiate notability claims made in the article, if you can identify at least three solid sources that discusses him thoroughly, you can always ping me to have a second look or just submit it. A tag has been placed on Natacha Akide requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion discussion, at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Tacha. When a page has substantially identical content to that of a page deleted after a discussion, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

Notice

The article Natacha Akide has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Fails GNG

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Esuike Theophy requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a real person or group of people that does not credibly indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator. Wikimedians for Sustainable Development - December 2023 Newsletter

[edit]
This is our twenty-seventh newsletter, a sort of year-in-review for 2023.

Dear Wikimedians for Sustainable Development,

As we bid farewell to 2023, we reflect on a year that has been an uneven year for our user group. While the journey has been marked by some truly inspiring events, most of our efforts have been largely uncoordinated and the user group hasn't been the support it could have been. Yet, there's a glimmer of hope and a world of potential for 2024.

Highlights of 2023:

Newsletters Galore
We kicked off the year with zeal, sharing updates and inspiration through four newsletters. The number of things happening in the movement is astounding, but we need to rethink the format of the newsletter going into the next year.
Growing Strong
The Wikimedians for Sustainable Development family welcomed 33 new members in 2023. Your passion and dedication continue to inspire us, and we look forward to nurturing this community spirit in the year ahead.
Wikimania Talks
Our voices echoed far and wide at Wikimania, where several members of our community took the virtual stage to share insights and ideas about everything from Wikipedians-in-Residence's to open data. Your contributions showcased our commitment to sustainable development on a global scale.
Content Creation Magic
Throughout the year, our extended community demonstrated incredible dedication to expanding the knowledge base on Wikipedia. Countless hours were spent creating and curating content that aligns with our mission, contributing to a more sustainable digital ecosystem.
Campaigning hard
We saw a large variety of campaigns, from writing challenges to editathons. The willingness to experiment with new formats and partners, as well as learning from past efforts, shows great promise for the future.

Acknowledging Challenges:

While we celebrate these achievements, we acknowledge that 2023 presented its fair share of challenges. A lack of global coordination reminded us that the road to sustainable development is not always linear. However, it is precisely these challenges that fuel our determination to work together more cohesively in the coming year and proof that the user group is needed.

Hopeful Anticipation for 2024:

As we turn the page to 2024, let's carry forward the lessons learned and the successes celebrated. We are optimistic that, with renewed energy and a collective commitment, we will overcome obstacles and create an even more impactful and connected Wikimedians for Sustainable Development community.

Here's to a year of collaboration, growth, and making a lasting impact on the world through our shared passion for sustainability. Together, we can turn challenges into opportunities and pave the way for a brighter future.

Wishing you all a joyous holiday season and a Happy New Year!

Warm regards, User:Ainali, User:Daniel Mietchen
