RIP

[edit]

I am sad to report that Ronhjones passed away on the day he made his last edit, as confirmed by a friend of his I contacted on Facebook, who confirmed that the Wikipedian and their friend were the same person. I can't find any online obituaries but there's his Facebook profile and this edit of his ... tying these together are LinkedIn and this Researchgate link, plus the information he posted on his userpage. I'm trying to contact his family.

I myself didn't know him very well, but I knew about his work in anti-vandalism and on non-free images. RIP. Graham87 13:39, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, that is very sad news - I did wonder if something was wrong with the lack of contributions. Ron helped me on numerous occasions and was a tireless fighter against vandalism. He will be much missed. RIP Ron. David J Johnson (talk) 13:56, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I mostly knew Ron from Commons. When someone doesn't edit for a while, you always assume they're just taking a wikibreak or moved on to other projects in their life. You never assume this. Rest in peace, Ron. - Alexis Jazz 17:26, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Such sad news, RIP Ron, My sincere condolences to friends and family. –Davey2010Talk 17:32, 1 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Very sad to hear this. A great Wikimedian, you really worked hard to make the place better! You're sorely missed. ~ Amory (utc) 01:27, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Personally I knew his contributions mostly through his bot which did many useful tasks across the 'pedia. I certainly wondered why he and his bot had stopped editing so suddenly. I never would've imagined the worst. Rest in peace, Ron. Galobtter (pingó mió) 05:38, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, Graham87, for the information, sad as it is. RIP, Ron. —DoRD (talk) 15:43, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This is sad news. We (the Ecton Mine Educational Trust, a registered charity) have located a video made in 1984 that we think Ron may have participated in producing, as interviewer of the late Geoff Cox who used the disused Ecton copper mine, Staffordshire as a base for education in chemistry, geology, and mining engineering. The video has been deposited at MACE (Media Archive for Central England) but they are refusing our request to contact the depositor, who we think may have been a member of Ron's family. The interview on this videotape is incomplete and we would very much like to locate the rest of it. It is an important part of our Trust's history, and parts of the interview would be very useful additions to our educational materials. We should be very grateful if you could contact members of Ron's family to find out whether it was indeed Ron Jones, and if so, the location of further videos that may contain the rest of the interview. I'll email you. Graham87 15:48, 26 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Obituary

[edit]

I have some even sadder news that I can now share publicly: Ron and his wife Sue died together in a house fire, as noted in their obituary from the London Inland Waterways Association newsletter. The friend of theirs who confirmed his passing also told me this info, but I didn't want to say it here without confirming that it was publicly available or getting permission. Graham87 16:02, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How depressing! :( I very much enjoyed working with Ronhjones over the years. It hurts to not only hear of his and his wife's passing, but that it took so long to uncover, and the such tragic and seemingly avoidable way that it happened. Rest in peace, Ron! You certainly made your mark here. We will miss you. MusikAnimal talk 21:43, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, how horribly sad. Thank you for letting us know, Graham. Ronhjones will be missed, has been missed, is missed. And however dreadful the knowing is, not knowing would have been worse. --bonadea contributions talk 22:19, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

European topics

Thank you for quality articles such as Chirk Tunnel, National Theatre, Warsaw and Karl-Heinz Schröter, for templates such as Oxford Canal Route Map, for work on the list of canal aqueducts in the United Kingdom, for the sense of humour in your infobox, - Ron, you are an awesome Wikipedian!

You are recipient no. 2390 of Precious, a prize of QAI. We miss you, and Sue. I wish I had met you sooner. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:39, 2 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Edit count stats

[edit]

Due to Ron's high edit count, it was impossible to use XTools Edit Counter to get a full picture of his edit count statistics, so I asked MusikAnimal, one of the maintainers of the tool, to create one manually for me. For anyone else who's curious, the output is at User:MusikAnimal/Ronhjones. Graham87 03:04, 7 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Graham87: thank you for linking this/asking for this to be created and thank you to MusikAnimal for generating the report. --TheSandDoctor Talk 06:41, 28 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

One of the userboxes he has put on this page states his current age as if he was still alive. Should this be changed to include the end dates as "year = 2019 and month=04" as what a late famous person's BLP would look like, say "{{death date and age|2019|4|7|1950|5|4|df=y}}" for example. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 23:27, 8 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Iggy the Swan: See the relevant page history. I considered this ... what would happen if you substed that template along with {{User Wikipedian For}} and User:X!/Userboxes/admin. There were two issues: it created a mess of wikicode, and I didn't realise the latter userbox had already been commented out as it's not obvious with my screen reader settings. It occurred to me that it'd be easier and probably more respectful to just comment the date-sensitive templates out altogether, so that's what I ended up doing. If you reeeeeally want to work on this in a clean way in a sandbox or something, feel free to do that and link to it here so it can be considered, but I personally think there are far more important things to do on the site. Graham87 05:20, 9 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nah, don't worry about it at all; let's tjust leave Ron's user page as it is. I for one am really glad I took the age template off my user page now ... Graham87 05:59, 9 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Respectively, the current version of the userboxes is better as it is instead of messing syntax code around. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 08:59, 9 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Iggy the Swan and Graham87: I agree. I also believe we should leave his userpage as it is, out of respect. But maybe we can add "Ron died in April 2019 at blah blah age" under deceased template? —usernamekiran (talk) 13:51, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Usernamekiran: Nah, it's fine as it is. Graham87 13:58, 1 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

With a heavy heart I've just nominated an article Ron created, UK Chemical Reaction Hazards Forum, for deletion; the nomination is at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/UK Chemical Reaction Hazards Forum. It feels insulting to place a normal deletion warning template here under the circumstances, but I think the nomination is worth mentioning here anyway. Graham87 13:20, 10 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ronhjones, how are you? Me I'm fine!

I opened this page about an ancient tradition in my region Lombardy. Please, I ask you some minutes, to correct my mistakes, it will be a great joy for me. Thanks a lot and have a nice week end.

Rei Momo (talk) 10:42, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Rei Momo: Um, there's no nice way to say this ... but he died in a house fire last April; see above. His death also explains why you never got a response to your last two messages, too, but the Wikipedia community didn't know about it at the time. Graham87 15:00, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Graham87: I'm very sorry for my message, but, believe me, it was not to be bad taste or macabre. Cause my quickly opening his page, I didn't put attention to the label. Sorry, very sorry. I light a candle for him in my house. Rei Momo (talk) 16:56, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Tony Ferguson Edit?

[edit]

I edited the Tony Ferguson page. Do I not have the permissions to do so after some 11 years of editing? With respect, this pi$$es me off (pardon my French). I have been reluctant to edit here for some years now, PURELY because of some (not saying you) Admins having ridiculous power trips. Any chance I could be granted whatever blessings, powers, and/or petmissions the Pope (or whoever) require so I may edit articles without being hassled and going through the extra trouble of a jury trial? 🤪. I'm retired now, and was hoping to do a lot of contributing in coming years, but I won't if I have to refight the Battle of the Hypen again. Doc James, you still around. Can I get a reference, bro? I will be doing lots of medicine stuff too. Thank you in advance for your decision, whatever it may be. Cliff (a/k/a "Uploadvirus") (talk) 16:40, 24 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

No, you're right - my sincere apologies. VERY bad day, long story. I was an idiot for posting that. Prayers for the deceased mans family, thanks for your kind - kinder than I deserved - reply. Cliff (a/k/a "Uploadvirus") (talk) 15:51, 25 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

your opinion please...

[edit]

I requested your opinion on the deletion of File:Krista Ford, business student and former captain of the Toronto Triumph, of the Lingerie Football League.jpg after a questionable {{f7}} tagging.

You didn't respond, possibily because a newbie mangled the heading. I am repeating that request. Geo Swan (talk) 00:38, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Um, @Geo Swan:, see the section right above this one – specifically, the second message there, from SuperMarioMan. Robby.is.on (talk) 00:59, 26 October 2020 (UTC)[reply]

First known Christmas without this legendary Wikipedian

[edit]

Since 7 April 2019, this Wikipedian only edited once before a sudden and unexpected pause in editing. Since then after noticing Ronbot has been blocked in late May of the same year, the admin who blocked it was thinking of the prospect on the hope Ron will return. Then in May 2020, I'd noticed the RIP section, giving the major clue that he would never return unfortunately. It is very hard to actually find Wikipedians of Facebook but User:Graham87 managed to do so and confirmed, via a friend of Ron on Facebook, that the sad news became a reality.

I am sure his family can have a safe Christmas this year thinking about him, his wife and precious pets. Thanks, Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 19:36, 23 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Lighting a candle two years after his final edit
In recognition of all the work Ronhjones has done over the years, I have lit a candle in memory of the good contributions both on the English and other Wikipedias in addition to Ronbot where I first noticed the user.

"Extreme pornography" listed at Redirects for discussion

[edit]

An editor has identified a potential problem with the redirect Extreme pornography and has thus listed it for discussion. This discussion will occur at Wikipedia:Redirects for discussion/Log/2022 May 19#Extreme pornography until a consensus is reached, and anyone, including you, is welcome to contribute to the discussion. BD2412 T 05:11, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@BD2412: In case you are unaware of the situation, this Wikimedian sadly passed away more than two years ago, as seen in this section. Therefore, for that reason, Ronhjones cannot take part in the discussion. I am aware that you've added the message via Twinkle so you might not have known about the sad news. Cheers, Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 06:02, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, this was an automated notice (and I have advocated for automated notices to not be delivered to deceased Wikipedians, but it was pointed out to me that they may catch the eyes of interested page-watchers). BD2412 T 06:05, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
That is a good idea re "advocated for automated notices to not be delivered to deceased Wikipedians"; it has happened once before this year but eventually that was removed by the same user. Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 06:16, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Going off on a tangent, a few years ago users of this Talk page were opining about the future potential lack of server space with the delivery of autoWikimedia messages into non-monitored targets, specifically the vast number of lapsed editors (I knew of similar from a project, where some had never edited mainspace). I have tried to take this notion further superficially, but WP has 'developed' - degenerated - into a giant lumbering dinosaur where nothing can be changed easily. Recently I was prompted to comment where an admin was concerned over the loss of editors; I had to recount the story of Jimbo appearing on semi-live UK tv, quoting 19 million editors (2015). The tally last time I looked was 42 million. This disparity in growing numbers is to me incongruous with editor-loss. It seems no-one wants to admit to this (these well-lapsed editors). I haven't looked closely at the recent sysop-activity threshhold changes, but I suggested a break-point of one-year inactivity, but this could be tweaked with further increments. I haven't suggested it at Village pump technical, although it's been at the back of my mind.--Rocknrollmancer (talk) 12:44, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Rocknrollmancer: The admin inactivity requirements have been set at a year for a while now; that's how I found out about this user's passing, because I've been monitoring/tweaking the former admins pages. We've just had a successful RFC to expand activity requirements for admins. Graham87 15:19, 19 May 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi page watchers of this talk page,

You will see before the RIP section that there is a link to a deleted page which the user has requested deletion[1]. Do we need to keep that on here or remove it? Iggy (Swan) (Contribs) 22:29, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Iggy the Swan: don't really need to keep it, but there's also no real need to change it. Let sleeping dogs lie I say. DatGuyTalkContribs 22:34, 8 November 2022 (UTC)[reply]
