Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *okï- (to call; to read); cognate with Azerbaijani oxumaq, Bashkir уҡыу (uqıw), Kazakh оқу (oqu), Kyrgyz окуу (okuu), Turkmen okamak, Uyghur ئوقىماق (oqimaq), Uzbek oʻqimoq and Yakut угуй (uguy).
