Via French koumis, German Kumiss, from Russian кумы́с (kumýs), borrowed from a Turkic source. Compare Tatar кымыз (qımız), Kazakh қымыз (qymyz), Kyrgyz кымыз (kımız), Northern Altai кымыс (kïmïs), Turkish kımız, Azerbaijani qımız.
