Etymology

Inherited from Ottoman Turkish آكلامق (añlamak, to understand, to comprehend),[1] from Proto-Turkic *āŋla- (to understand), from Proto-Turkic *āŋ (intelligence, ability to understand).[2][3] Cognate with Salar añna.

anlamak (third-person singular simple present anlar)

  1. (transitive) To understand, to comprehend, to get.
    • 2004, “Bir Derdim Var”, performed by Mor ve Ötesi:
      Hiç anlatamadım, hiç anlamadılar.
      I couldn't explain at all, they didn't understand at all.
  2. (transitive) To find something correct and appropriate.
  3. (transitive) To sense or predict someone's feelings or thoughts.
  4. (intransitive, with ablative) To have knowledge on something.
  5. (intransitive, with ablative) To benefit from, to gain advantage from something.
