From Ottoman Turkish اگه (eğe), from Proto-Turkic *ẹ̄ke-.

Cognate with Bashkir игәү (igəw), Kazakh егеу (egeu), Kyrgyz өгөө (ögöö), Southern Altai эгӱ (egü), Uzbek egov (file).
