araryboîa
Old Tupi
[edit]Etymology
[edit]By surface analysis, arara (“macaw”) + 'yba (“plant”) + mboîa (“snake”), literally “snake of the macaws' plant”. See also araryba. For the b + m(b)/p > b sound change, compare 'ybotyra ('yba + potyra), kuabe'eng (kuab + me'eng), obeba (oba + peba), etc.[1] Compare also cobra-papagaio, one of the Portuguese names for the snake, seemingly a calque.
