Etymology

[edit]

From Middle Low German even, effen, from Old Saxon evan, from Proto-West Germanic *ebn, from Proto-Germanic *ebnaz, cognate with English even, Dutch even. Compare Danish effen. See also jämn.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • IPA(key): /²ɛːvɛn/
  • Audio:(file)

Adverb

[edit]

även (not comparable)

  1. also
    Synonym: också
Björnar är djur. Björn är även ett vanligt förnamn.
Bears are animals. Björn / Bear is also [with a tone of "additionally"] a common first name. ["Björn är också ett vanligt förnamn" also works]

Usage notes

[edit]
  • English even may partially be considered a false friend. The difference between också and även is subtler compared to the difference between also and even, and closer to also vs. additionally. The best translation for both också and även is usually also.
  • For English even when used to express that something is remarkable ("You might find this hard to believe, but it's even ...", etc.), see till och med and ännu.
